Hello everyone, I have a Malm dresser from IKEA and would like to change its color afterwards. However, I am unsure which materials are best suited to achieve a smooth, even finish without compromising the quality of the furniture. I am leaning towards painting, but wonder if it is necessary to apply a primer first or if paints can adhere directly to the laminate, and how I should best prepare the surface. Which types of paint and methods work best to achieve a long-lasting and visually appealing color change? Thanks in advance for any helpful tips and experiences!

I recommend taking a closer look at alternatives like two-component (2K) coatings, which cure harder and are more resistant.\

This is a point I would like to add to: Many say that 2K coatings are the better option, but there is often a lack of real-world evidence regarding their long-term durability on furniture used in residential settings under typical household conditions. Considering this, it would be interesting to know whether these 2K coatings are actually significantly more durable than well-applied acrylic coatings with a primer.

Personally, I think: if you want to be on the safe side, then yes. But you have to do a good job, and it can backfire quickly if you’re not experienced. For most DIY projects at home, good acrylic paint with a bonding primer is more than enough. 🙂

Thank you for the helpful answers so far! I am still wondering whether I need to remove the Malm handles before painting or if it’s okay to cover them with tape and paint over them. Also, I’m interested to know if I should be careful when sanding to avoid removing too much of the coating, as I’m concerned that the material underneath – probably particleboard – might become visible. Are there any recommendations on this?

Hello MAUJEREMIA, I definitely recommend unscrewing the handles first. This will also help you reach the areas underneath much better, which is important for a clean result. Masking and painting over can later create unsightly transitions. When sanding, you should only apply the sandpaper lightly; the goal is not to remove the entire surface but just to roughen it slightly. If you sand too deeply, you will quickly see the particle board underneath. Choose a fine grit sandpaper and work with light pressure. If that happens, you can fill the area with filler and sand it carefully afterward, but this requires a delicate touch.
