Hello everyone,

I am planning to modify our IKEA BILLY bookcases to make them completely child-friendly. The shelves are located in the living room and will be used by our children in the future – both for playing and storage. It is important to me that safety comes first: there should be no sharp edges or pointed corners, nothing should tip over, and everything must be stable and easily accessible. At the same time, I want to avoid significantly reducing the functionality through modifications – the shelves should still provide enough storage space.

I am especially interested in which specific methods or materials you would recommend to make the BILLY bookcases child-safe. Are there special corner protectors available? How do you securely attach the bookcases to the wall, especially with lively small children around? And do you perhaps have tips for useful additions like doors, flexible inserts, or other modifications?

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

I completely understand that; I had similar concerns when our kids started exploring the apartment.

A major point for us was wall mounting. We used very sturdy brackets and secured the shelves so they can’t tip over – that really provides a lot of safety, especially when little ones play energetically.

We also covered the sharp edges with self-adhesive corner protectors made of soft plastic. These are easy to apply and can often blend in visually quite well.

A personal tip: if you fit the shelves with doors, make sure the doors are childproof – either with a magnetic latch or special handles that are difficult for children to open. This protects not only against mess but also against pinching injuries.

Of course, a certain level of caution remains, but these measures definitely help you feel much more secure.

That is actually a key point!

To really make BILLY shelves child-friendly, I recommend the following step-by-step process, which takes technical details and safety aspects into account:

1. Wall anchoring: Definitely use the supplied mounting hardware and, if possible, supplement it with longer screws and suitable anchors (depending on the wall type). The firmer the connection, the safer it is.

2. Edge treatment: If you are handy, consider slightly rounding off the sharp edges of the shelves by sanding them or using a router to create a gentle curve. Afterwards, cover the surfaces with child-safe edge protectors made of silicone or plastic.

3. Installing doors: For additional safety and aesthetics, you can use BILLY doors or custom-made doors. Make sure the doors have child-proof hinges and locks. Magnetic catches are a good option because they close gently and reduce the risk of finger pinching.

4. Load capacity check: BILLY shelves are known to be fairly lightweight in construction. If children also climb on them, this can be critical. Therefore, I recommend reinforcing the shelves with additional wooden shelves (e.g., 18 mm (0.7 inch) plywood) and, if possible, strengthening the back panel. This will improve stability.

I’m curious: How old are your children and what are the spatial conditions? This can affect the approach somewhat.

Are there special protective caps for the corners? How do you securely attach the shelves to the wall?

Hello, I recently adapted the classic BILLY Kids “family-friendly” style myself 😄

I can only recommend using those self-adhesive corner protectors made of soft rubber or silicone—they really help without ruining the look. Especially when kids are playing around the furniture, this is super important.

Regarding wall mounting: very straightforward! Just screw in the provided fasteners following the instructions, and it’s best to add an extra metal bracket for wall support. That way, it becomes practically unbreakable. And please make sure to add a back panel if the shelf doesn’t have one—that adds a lot of stability!

Another tip for storage: use flexible baskets or colorful boxes. This not only makes it safer by preventing small items from scattering everywhere but also looks cheerful! :-) I would only add doors if the kids no longer reach into all the compartments—otherwise, they can get stuck or be inconvenient.

Good luck with your modifications—the kids will love it!
