nadjadaHello everyone, I plan to use several IKEA Billy bookcases in our home, including in the children’s rooms. My question is how to make these shelves as child-safe as possible without compromising their stability.
By child-safe, I mainly mean preventing them from tipping over and ensuring that children cannot easily climb on them or hurt themselves. At the same time, I don’t want to lose the proven stability of the shelves; they should remain sturdy even after any safety measures are applied. Do you have any experience or good tips on anchoring, securing, or recommended additions?
Thanks in advance!

My question is how to make these shelves as child-safe as possible without compromising stability? The most basic and effective measure is to anchor the Billy shelves to the wall using the included wall mounting hardware. It is important to use appropriate screws and plugs for the specific wall type to ensure maximum stability.
Additionally, it is recommended to place heavy items on the lower shelves to lower the center of gravity. For protection against climbing, side panels or mesh attachments can be installed on the back or sides without affecting the shelf’s stability.
This combination of mechanical securing and load adjustment has proven effective.

Securing the Billy shelves to the wall using the included wall fastenersThat is correct, but it is important to note that the supplied fasteners are intended for standard walls and can fail quickly on special wall types such as drywall without additional reinforcement. In such cases, cavity anchors or metal anchors should be used.

place heavy items at the bottomThis lowers the center of gravity; however, you must ensure that the shelf load capacity is not exceeded. The Billy shelves have a maximum load of about 30 kg (66 lbs) per shelf. It is also recommended to distribute the load evenly across the entire width of the shelf to improve stability.
There are also options such as adding a cross brace or attaching metal brackets inside the shelf unit to increase structural rigidity. Especially if children climb on it, this reduces stress on the point-mounted fastener and better distributes the load across the furniture.
Another recommendation is to regularly check the wall fixings, especially when young children are active. Screws can loosen over time, which can significantly affect safety.
It is also advisable to avoid adding too many play or climbing aids directly on the shelves. Small children often see shelves as climbing frames, so a simple child safety gate placed in front of the shelves can sometimes help prevent climbing directly on them.

You should use hollow wall anchors or metal fasteners hereThank you, that’s an important tip. Our walls are actually drywall. Could someone provide precise recommendations for suitable anchors or fasteners for this situation?

Child safety gate in front of the shelfAlso interesting, that would be really easy to implement. Is there anything specific that works especially well without overcrowding the rooms?
