Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen with the Ikea Metod system and considering integrating a kitchen island that not only provides plenty of storage space but can also serve as a seating area for family or guests. I am particularly interested in how to design such an island in a practical and functional way, ensuring both optimized storage and comfort for seating. What experiences have you had with planning kitchen islands using the Metod system? Are there specific modules or combinations that work especially well for this? Any advice regarding the load-bearing countertop or dimensions would also be helpful. Thanks in advance for your tips and ideas!

This is a really interesting topic! About a year ago, I built a Metod island that serves exactly that purpose, and it’s amazing how flexible the system is. For ample storage space, I chose a combination of deep base cabinets and drawers, which are particularly practical. It’s also important to carefully plan the seating height – I used bar stools with a seat height between 60 and 65 cm (24 and 26 inches), so the countertop is a bit higher, around 110 cm (43 inches).

In addition to the classic drawers, I installed some open shelves underneath to keep cookbooks or decorative items easily accessible. The countertop should definitely be sturdy – I went with a solid wood top, which is easy to work with. You can also opt for an overhanging countertop to ensure enough legroom for those seated. As a general rule, make sure the gap between the cabinet box and seating area is generously sized so the island doesn’t feel cramped.

If you need more details, I’m happy to help!

I would like to add that the design of the island strongly depends on the room size and its intended use. For a kitchen island with ample storage and seating, precise planning of the module sizes is essential. In the Metod system, standard widths are 60, 80, 100, and 120 cm (24, 31.5, 39, and 47 inches). For storage, especially tall cabinets or at least deeper drawers with pull-outs are suitable, as these allow for efficient use of space.

For the seating area, I recommend an overhanging countertop with a depth of at least 30 cm (12 inches) to ensure enough legroom. When planning, you should also consider the connection profiles and fittings, as these can slightly reduce the available space.

Another important consideration is the integration of special internal organization solutions, such as cutlery inserts or storage systems in the drawers. For stability, it is advisable to reinforce the countertop, especially at the corners of the seating areas, in case people lean on them.

If you like, you can send me the exact floor plan and measurements, and I can give you specific tips on how best to arrange the modules. The aspect of under-counter lighting can also become interesting later on.

I’ve been wondering about this for a long time: Why is there always this urge to have a seating island? To me, it often seems like a compromise solution that doesn’t provide proper storage or create a genuine dining atmosphere. I’d prefer to clearly separate the two: a compact island for working and a separate cozy dining area.

Metod is versatile, but its modules aren’t necessarily ideal for planning an island that perfectly covers every need. You either have to rely on expensive custom countertops or make compromises with the seating height, which then doesn’t really suit either bar stools or regular kitchen chairs.

I would consider building a simple work island and planning the seating area separately in a corner or niche. But of course, that’s a matter of personal preference 😊. In my opinion, with Metod, this can only be partially solved perfectly.

I see this more nuanced, as Metod’s modular system actually offers many options that can combine storage and seating if planned well. I recommend the following points:

- Design the island in two zones: one for storage with deep drawers, and one for seating with an overhang of the countertop
- Ideal seating height for bar stools is between 100–110 cm (39–43 inches) countertop height, which you can achieve by adding a higher plinth
- Use drawer organizers for tidiness and taller cabinets for maximum storage capacity

The real challenge is choosing the right dimensions and selecting the fronts and countertop materials, especially if the countertop includes an overhang. Make sure to provide sufficient reinforcement to prevent wobbling when people lean on it.

A well-planned Metod island can definitely meet both requirements, but it demands careful planning and possibly customizing the standard modules.

Great to see so many different opinions coming together here! 😄

I’ve had a Metod island with seating for two years now and can say: it’s fun how flexible everything is. It was important to me not to make the seating surface too high since we use regular chairs, not bar stools. I extended the countertop so that it projects about 10 cm (4 inches) beyond the cabinet, which is enough for comfortable seating.

Tip: If you plan seating, be sure to allow plenty of legroom—I measured myself first, and that was really helpful! I mostly created storage with lots of drawers, which is simply more practical than doors with shelves.

And honestly: the fun factor while cooking has increased significantly thanks to the island, because everything is within easy reach and it doesn’t feel cramped. So don’t be afraid to be bold and try it out!
