Hello everyone, I have a specific question: How can you secure an IKEA Billy bookshelf in a rental apartment without drilling screws or anchors into the wall? I understand that structural modifications are often not allowed in rental properties, but I still want to set up the shelf securely so it doesn’t easily tip over or get damaged. Are there any proven solutions that work well even for heavy bookcases? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

I find this question very relevant since many rental apartments have strict regulations. However, I doubt that a large BILLY shelf can be securely mounted without drilling anything into the wall.

Are you familiar with alternative mounting methods like clamping or tension frames? While they don’t guarantee complete stability, they might be sufficient for the current needs.

Place the shelf with edge protection and anti-slip mats at the back between the shelf and the wall. Make it heavy enough to prevent tipping. No wall fixing required.

Hello Egilfe, I completely understand your concern. There are several ways to securely position shelves like the BILLY without using screws. For example, you can use furniture tension rods or clips that fit between the ceiling and the shelf and stabilize the shelf by applying pressure.

Alternatively, you can place wide, non-slip rubber pads under the shelf’s feet. It is also important to fill the shelf well so that it is less likely to tip over on its own.

However, I recommend always checking the rental agreement and possibly discussing it with the landlord before deciding on a solution. 🙂

Thank you for the responses so far!

I hadn’t considered clamping or tension frames before; they sound interesting. Are there any experience-based estimates on how much weight such structures can support?

Does this also work with brick ceilings, or is it mainly suitable for suspended ceilings?

I’m unsure if I would feel comfortable with temporary solutions when I have many heavy books on the shelf.

Furniture clamps work well with suspended ceilings, but it becomes challenging with solid brick ceilings. Simply use non-slip rubber pads and load the shelf heavily – this helps ensure stability.
