ᐅ Who uses hardened wax oil on Kallax surfaces – any experience or insights?

SieghartHello everyone!
I recently assembled a Kallax shelf in my hobby room and want to treat the surface with hardwax oil to make it durable while maintaining a natural look. My question is: Who has experience using hardwax oil specifically on Kallax surfaces? I am especially interested in long-lasting results, everyday durability, and maintenance effort.
Are there any special considerations for surface preparation or application that I should be aware of? Also, how does the treatment affect the color of the Kallax wood – does it darken significantly or stay close to the original tone?
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hey Sieghart!
It’s great that you tried hard wax oil on your Kallax! 🙂 I did the same last year and was really impressed by the durable finish the oil provides. It’s important to lightly sand the wood beforehand so the oil can penetrate well.
For me, the color tone refreshed a bit and became slightly richer, but not too dark. Maintenance is very simple: just clean occasionally with a mild cleaner or simply wipe with a dry cloth, and the shelf looks like new!
Make sure to keep up with the maintenance, as it significantly extends the lifespan! Good luck and let us know how it goes for you! 🙂

Regarding the topic of hardwax oil on Kallax surfaces, there are several important points to consider.
First, the shelf should be thoroughly sanded before applying the oil, ideally with 120 or 150 grit sandpaper, to slightly roughen the surface.
Second, the oil should preferably be applied in several thin layers, allowing each to absorb well and wiping off any excess to achieve an even finish and avoid sticky spots.
Regarding color change: hardwax oil usually slightly darkens the wood but does not significantly alter its color. At least two coats are recommended to achieve a good protective layer.
Regarding durability: with proper care, the surface will become long-lasting, water-resistant, and dirt-repellent, maintaining good performance even with frequent use.

Preferably apply oil in several thin layers,Exactly, that is crucial.
Sand beforehand, then allow each layer to dry thoroughly.
Don’t forget to wipe off excess, otherwise the surface will remain sticky.
Hello Sieghart,
Some time ago, I treated Kallax shelves with hardwax oil and can say from experience that preparation is key. The surface should be clean, free of grease, and finely sanded so the oil can absorb properly. The oil does not work on plastic coatings, however.
If you have the original shelving system made of lacquered MDF, you should definitely test first on an inconspicuous corner to see if the oil is absorbed at all.
I also recommend, after drying, to lightly roughen the surface with a fine sanding pad and then apply a second coat. This ensures better durability.
There are care products specifically designed for surfaces treated with hardwax oil, which I recommend for long-lasting sealing.
Have you already considered a specific manufacturer or product?

Occasionally wipe down with a mild cleaner or simply use a dry cloth, and the shelf looks as good as new! Thanks for the tip, NUPIN! I plan to have the shelf in a room with moderate use, so light cleaning with a cloth is ideal.

At least two coats are recommended to achieve a good protective layer. How long should I ideally wait between applications? And is there a recommended room temperature for applying and drying?
Thanks again for all the answers so far!
