Hello everyone!
I recently assembled a Kallax shelf in my hobby room and want to treat the surface with hardwax oil to make it durable while maintaining a natural look. My question is: Who has experience using hardwax oil specifically on Kallax surfaces? I am especially interested in long-lasting results, everyday durability, and maintenance effort.
Are there any special considerations for surface preparation or application that I should be aware of? Also, how does the treatment affect the color of the Kallax wood – does it darken significantly or stay close to the original tone?
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

How long should I ideally wait between each application? The recommended drying time for hard wax oil typically ranges from 8 to 24 hours, depending on the manufacturer and conditions.
Recommendation: at least 12 hours to ensure the oil has properly cured before applying the next coat.

Is there a recommended ideal room temperature for applying and drying?Optimal temperatures are between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius (64 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit) with relative humidity around 50%. Lower temperatures or high humidity significantly extend drying times.
Important: Good ventilation helps speed up drying, but avoid drafts as they can cause uneven curing of the oil.
Just as a provocation:
Is it really necessary to treat Kallax with hardwax oil? The shelf is mainly used for storage anyway, and the surface is actually quite durable.
In my opinion: Enhancing the natural wood look too much tends to ruin the simple charm of the furniture and creates unnecessary work and cost. Of course, protection is important, but sometimes less is more.
What do you think? Is hardwax oil really the best choice for Kallax, or is it more of a luxury that isn’t needed?
