Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series and would like to protect it as effectively as possible from sun damage. The light wood surfaces, in particular, seem prone to fading and minor warping caused by continuous UV exposure and intense heat.

I am therefore interested in which methods or products have proven effective in protecting IKEA Hemnes furniture from sunlight without negatively affecting their appearance or surface. Are there specific care products, UV-protective coatings, or practical coverings that help in the long term?

Additionally, I would appreciate any tips on how to recognize typical damage early so that countermeasures can be taken before major repairs are needed.

Thank you in advance for your expertise and experiences!

Good evening,

regarding your question about how to protect IKEA Hemnes furniture from sun damage, there are several approaches:

- Apply UV protective film to windows: This is one of the most effective ways to protect wood from UV rays, as it directly reduces sunlight exposure.
- Regularly treat the furniture with suitable furniture oil or wax: Hemnes is made of lacquered pine wood, so it is important to use products specifically designed for lacquered surfaces that do not leave a film that darkens with a yellowish tint.
- Avoid placing furniture in direct sunlight: If possible, position the furniture so it is only exposed to indirect light, for example slightly to the side or protected by curtains.

For early detection of damage, it is worthwhile to regularly check for discoloration, small cracks in the lacquer, or signs of deformation such as slight warping. This allows you to perform touch-ups or adjust the location early on.

Important: Avoid aggressive cleaning agents, as they can damage the lacquer layer and make it more sensitive to UV.

I hope this helps!

I would recommend simply using blinds or shutters to prevent the furniture from being exposed to direct sunlight constantly. UV protection sprays for wood also work well and do not damage the surface.

Here is a factual overview of protection options for Hemnes furniture against UV and sun damage:

- UV protective varnishes are generally suitable; however, IKEA painted surfaces often have a polyurethane coating that can make applying additional varnishes difficult. It is important to choose a product that is compatible or does not cause dulling/destructive changes.
- Furniture film or special UV protective window films can reduce the UV rays reaching the furniture by up to 99 percent.
- Breathable fabric covers can protect against sudden sunlight exposure but do not provide permanent protection when exposed to direct light sources.

For early detection, regular visual inspections for fading, discoloration, and dull spots are particularly important. Superficial varnish damage should be repaired promptly with a suitable touch-up pen if it progresses.

The recommendation is therefore: prevention through room design and window films, supplemented by targeted care of the furniture surface, and definitely avoiding aggressive or abrasive cleaning.

Hope this gives you a clear overview.

I find this very important because I myself noticed that the finish on my Hemnes bed fades in intensity in some spots when exposed to direct sunlight. It’s difficult to notice such changes until they become quite obvious.

I recommend especially checking new furniture several times a month during the first year. It’s also a matter of whether you actively rearrange items to protect both your quality of life and the furniture.

Additionally, I have had good experiences using curtains during the day — this not only protects against UV but also creates a pleasant indoor climate.

I really like the look of the furniture, but I want to preserve it as long as possible, so I fully support the advice about using covers and curtains.

This recommendation is pragmatic but somewhat short-sighted when considering the durability of Hemnes furniture. The question is to what extent merely avoiding sunlight is sufficient or whether certain materials of the furniture are intrinsically altered by UV radiation.

Furthermore, UV protection sprays for wood can indeed help in the long term, but it is important to consider whether these sprays inevitably cause issues or darkening on painted surfaces. Product data sheets are crucial for this assessment.

It is also important to critically evaluate whether window films affect the room’s aesthetics or alter the quality of light so much that undesirable consequences arise.

Ultimately, an effective protection strategy requires a balanced combination of structural measures, furniture care, and adjusting light exposure as needed.
