gemau36Hello everyone,
I am currently facing a problem where I need your expertise. I want to set up a Billy bookshelf in a location where the floor is not completely level. There are small uneven spots that could potentially cause issues during assembly, especially regarding the stability and twisting of the bookshelf.
Therefore, my question is: Are there specific tips or proven methods for assembling a Billy bookshelf on uneven floors? I am thinking of solutions like shims, special types of anchors, adjustable feet, or other tricks to ensure the bookshelf stands firmly and is not at risk of tipping over or getting damaged.
I look forward to your advice and experiences!

Hello,
to securely install a Billy shelf on uneven floors, I recommend the following structured approach:
1. First, accurately measure the floor unevenness. Small differences of up to 1–2 mm (0.04–0.08 inches) can often be compensated with simple furniture gliders.
2. For larger irregularities, adjustable feet that can be mounted separately are a good option. This allows the shelf to be precisely leveled.
3. Alternatively, thin washers or felt pads under the shelf feet can work, but their load capacity should be taken into account.
4. It is also important to always fasten the shelf to the wall. Suitable wall anchors should be used, which provide secure fixing points even on less than ideal substrates (e.g., heavy-duty anchors for concrete or toggle bolts for drywall).
5. For highly uneven floors, it may also be advisable to level the surface with appropriate filler or leveling compound before assembly.
This way, stability can be ensured and damage to the furniture or floor can be avoided.

Hello gemau36,
I support Fitigu’s explanation and would like to add a few tips that might be helpful:
You can find such feet as accessories, for example, in DIY stores or at IKEA itself. They allow precise leveling of the shelving unit.
Securing the shelf to the wall is not only important for safety reasons but also prevents tipping, especially on uneven floors. Always use the supplied metal brackets or appropriate fixing materials suitable for the type of wall (brick, drywall, etc.).
One more tip: If you use felt pads for leveling, make sure they are sturdy enough. Sometimes, a combination of several thin felt pieces can work better to compensate for the slope.
And if it is really very uneven, it might be worth placing a simple wooden board underneath and leveling it first with self-leveling compound.
I hope this helps!

Hey gemau36 and everyone else 🙂
I had the same issue with my Billy and wanted to share my experience!
First of all: Don’t panic. The shelf held up really well for me, even though the floor wasn’t perfectly level. I simply stuck small felt pads to the feet, which surprisingly helped a lot.
I also experimented a bit with so-called “furniture shims”—those are small plastic or rubber wedges you slip under the feet to even out height differences. They work great and are quick to use!
Exactly! The pads shouldn’t be too thin, or they’ll get crushed quickly.
And very important: make sure to secure the shelf to the wall afterwards—that makes all the difference. Otherwise, it can become unstable pretty fast.
Good luck with the assembly, you’ll manage it! 🙂

Hello everyone!
It’s amazing how many great ideas have already been shared here! I’d like to add: There are even practical adjustable furniture feet with a small screw for fine-tuning – really great when the floor is very uneven! This allows you to align your shelf precisely to the millimeter, so nothing wobbles anymore.
These parts are truly a small game changer! You don’t even have to install them in a complicated way – just attach them instead of the regular feet, either by sticking or screwing them on (depending on the design). Even with stronger irregularities, your shelves remain stable and secure.
I personally use these feet on several shelves and can only recommend them! 😊
So, go ahead and start building! If you like, feel free to reach out if you have any questions ;-)
