Hello everyone, I have been considering getting a Pax wardrobe from Ikea for some time to neatly store my file binders. However, I am not entirely sure if the Pax system includes compartments or configurations specifically designed for file binders. My main question is: Are there Ikea Pax wardrobes with compartments that are sized and designed specifically for file binders? It would be helpful if someone with experience could share whether such compartments are available for direct purchase, or if it is more common to rely on flexible solutions like adjustable shelves or additional organizer accessories. For clear use in offices or home offices, where the binders fit well and are easily accessible, I am looking for a solution that fits as precisely as possible. Thanks in advance for your advice and tips!

First of all, the IKEA PAX series is generally very flexible when it comes to interior layout. However, if you are asking whether there are specifically prefabricated compartments designed for lever arch files, the answer is more nuanced: the height of lever arch files is usually around 32 to 35 cm (13 to 14 inches). The shelves in PAX are adjustable, but not always precisely tailored to these dimensions.

You won’t find special “file compartments” as a separate unit; instead, you need to use the flexibility of the adjustable shelves to set the shelf height accordingly. Alternatively, IKEA offers other organizers that can be inserted, but those are more like accessories. Therefore, I would say there is no IKEA PAX furniture specifically designed for lever arch file compartments—you have to tactically adjust the shelf heights yourself. While convenient, it’s not a 100% ready-made solution.

It’s also important to keep an eye on load capacity and stability of the shelves, as lever arch files are quite heavy. How relevant will the load-bearing capacity be for your situation? And would you be willing to use accessories to optimize the compartments?

In addition to Victor54’s explanation: The PAX systems are truly designed to be versatile. This means the main advantage is their adaptability through adjustable shelves.

The most common lever arch files are about 32 cm (13 inches) high, depending on the brand and model. In the PAX system, you can position the shelves quite flexibly by using the pre-drilled holes to define the height of the compartments. This way, you can create multiple compartments perfectly sized for your file folders.

What I also recommend is, besides fixed wooden shelves, to look for suitable drawer inserts or boxes that you can integrate into PAX. These complement the system well if you want to store smaller documents or accessories separately.

That is correct, it basically becomes a modular system, which has the advantage that you can plan very individually. I have PAX in my home office myself and use exactly this setup—just adjust the shelves to the height of the files, and that’s it.

I might take on the role of the skeptic here: Sure, the PAX models are highly flexible, but when it comes to organizing lever arch files, they are more of a half-hearted compromise than a tailor-made solution.

My argument: Ikea doesn’t sell shelving units with compartments precisely fitting lever arch files because the range is designed to be as versatile as possible. A compartment fixed at 32 cm (13 inches) in height goes against the idea of flexibility—you lose adaptability.

Now one might wonder whether an optimized filing system is better achieved with specialized office furniture – definitely, but Ikea aims to remain maximally flexible through accessories and therefore relies on adjustable shelves.

My conclusion: If you want the absolute best, Ikea PAX is likely not a perfect solution, just an acceptable one. But if you want convenience and customization, then yes, PAX offers a good compromise for your files.

Personally, I think you shouldn’t expect a tailor-made solution, but rather a modular, semi-finished base to further modify.

In summary, based on my research and experience with Ikea PAX, the following can be said:

- Ikea does not offer pre-made compartments specifically designed for file folder sizes.
- The PAX series includes adjustable shelves, allowing you to set the shelf height individually.
- The standard widths (50, 75, 100 cm) and depths (35 and 58 cm) are compatible with common file folders.
- Shelf load capacity is usually between 15-25 kg (33-55 lbs) – sufficient for multiple folders, but it should not be overloaded.
- Ikea also offers optional storage baskets and drawer inserts for additional storage solutions.
- For very precise dimensions, it is advisable to measure your own folders before planning.

Ikea verkauft keine Reglerschränke mit exakt passenden Fächern für Aktenordner, weil das Sortiment darauf ausgelegt ist, möglichst breit eingesetzt werden zu können.

I agree with this. PAX is a modular system, not an office furniture program with fixed compartment sizes for files. Nevertheless, I consider the adjustability to be a sufficiently good basis for storing file folders neatly and properly.
