Hello everyone, I am currently assembling several Ikea Metod base cabinets and want to equip them with soft-close doors and drawers. I already have experience with furniture assembly, but I noticed that the soft-close mechanism on the Metod cabinets requires precise adjustment to ensure smooth and quiet closing.

My specific question is: What steps and tips should be followed when installing the Metod cabinets with the soft-close function? I am looking for a detailed and structured guide that also covers the installation of hinges and drawer slides, including the soft-close technology. I am especially interested in how to properly align the individual components so that no readjustment is needed and the doors or drawers close neatly and evenly after assembly.

Who has practical experience or knows important details and pitfalls to avoid? Thanks in advance for your support!

Hello Sarsu,

To ensure a clean and functional installation of Ikea Metod cabinets with soft-close doors and drawers, I recommend proceeding step by step and paying close attention to the following points:

- Assembly of the carcass components: Make sure the connections between the side panels and the bottom/top panels are perfectly square, as inaccuracies will affect the operation of the doors and drawers.

- Installation of the hinges: The TÄNKVÄRD hinges with soft-close feature come with built-in damping chambers. After snapping them into the holes on the side panel, it is essential to adjust the hinge pins for depth and lateral alignment. Use precise screw turns to align the door flush with the carcass.

- Assembly of the drawer slides: Metod drawers often have RÅDIM soft-close runners. These must be mounted completely straight and at the same height, otherwise the drawer may stick or not close smoothly.

- Adjustment of the soft-close function: The dampers usually have an adjustment screw to control the damping intensity. If the drawer closes too forcefully, slightly loosening the screw often helps.

- Inspection and fine adjustment: After completing the assembly, it is advisable to check all alignments — doors should run parallel to the carcass, and drawers should close evenly, without rubbing.

If you have difficulty achieving precise assembly, first check with a spirit level and a square whether the base surface and the carcass itself are perfectly aligned.

I’m happy to share a more detailed step-by-step guide or additional technical tips for optimal adjustment if needed. Your goal of minimizing follow-up work is definitely the right approach.

What is your general experience level with furniture assembly? That way, I can assist you more effectively.

Exactly, it’s important to insert the hinges loosely at first and then adjust the tuning screws one after the other. This prevents overstressing that can impair the soft-close function.

I also recommend checking the drill holes and fittings before assembly. Ikea usually supplies well-pre-drilled carcasses, but with batch production there can be variations that may become problematic later on.

Regarding soft-close drawer slides: pay close attention to the correct mounting height and ensure both runners are installed parallel. Using a spirit level or a jig is the best way to align the two rails precisely.

Additionally, it’s advisable to test the soft-close mechanism before final assembly to make sure it operates smoothly and without any audible noises. If there are hard impacts or rattling sounds, the mounting should be checked again.

In short: precise alignment and adjustment are prerequisites for a durable soft-close function.

Hang the door hinges roughly first, then adjust them.
Test the soft-close mechanism before installation.
Mount the drawer slides parallel and flush.
Correct any slight tilting after installation.
Ensure an even gap between the door and the cabinet body.

Thank you, I’ll do that. How can I tell if the hinge adjustment is ideal? My last attempts resulted in doors that remained slightly ajar after closing or required too much force to reach the final stop. Is this mainly a matter of adjusting the screws, or can incorrect drilling or doors that are too heavy also affect the soft-close function negatively?

For the drawers as well, I wonder if there’s a trick to setting the damping slowly. Are there any guidelines on how much to turn the adjustment to achieve smooth closing, especially for drawers with higher loads?

I recommend fully closing the doors after adjustment and then checking if they sit flush with the frame and stay closed without needing to be pushed.

Both can play a role. Doors that are too heavy can overload the damping mechanism, and poorly aligned drill holes cause uneven stress. If you did not make the drill holes yourself, they are usually accurate, but also check the installation precision with a spirit level.

Most dampers have a small adjustment screw where tiny turns allow fine-tuning. Take your time and adjust in small increments, testing each setting under load if possible.

If there is no improvement, sometimes replacing the hinges with stronger versions or adding reinforcements helps.
