Hello everyone,

I have repeatedly experienced an issue with my Ikea Metod kitchen where one of the doors keeps falling off the hinges. This usually happens after a few days, even though the door was initially installed correctly and the alignment hasn’t changed. The hinges don’t seem loose or damaged, and I have already tightened them several times – yet the door still won’t stay properly in place and keeps falling off.

Does anyone have an explanation or any ideas on what might be causing this? I suspect it could be related to the hinge mechanism or the mounting wood, but I’m not sure. It would be great if you could help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Oh dear, that sounds like a real nuisance! 😅 Have you checked if the screw hole for the hinge might be stripped? This happens more often with some cheaper furniture, and then the screw no longer holds properly. Sometimes it helps to glue a wooden dowel in there so the screw can grip better again.

Or perhaps you have the wrong hinge model? Metod occasionally offers different variants, and not all fit every cabinet frame equally well.

Hang in there, we’ll figure it out together!

The most common cause is that the screws in the carcass are not tightened enough or the wood is too soft. Tighten the screws, or alternatively, insert wooden dowels into the holes and re-screw.

That sounds plausible. I’ve also struggled with the frustration when furniture parts just don’t cooperate.

What helped me back then was adjusting the door together with a second person and tightening the screws in smaller increments—not fully tight all at once, but gradually. Maybe you could try that to ensure the tension is distributed more evenly.

It’s interesting that everyone here immediately talks about “worn-out holes.”

In my opinion, the problem often runs deeper — namely in the cheap mass production by large corporations like Ikea, which prioritize quantity over quality. Metod is good, of course, but the hinges eventually wear out because the door is too heavy or installed incorrectly, right?

I argue that if a door keeps falling off its hinges, it’s also due to poor hinge mechanism design and materials. Sure, you can drill new holes or reinforce it, but that’s just a temporary fix for an inherently flawed system.

To the point:
- If the door on Metod cabinets keeps falling off, it is usually due to one of the following reasons:
- Screws are loose in the cabinet frame (worn-out holes)
- Hinges are incorrectly installed (wrong alignment or poor fit)
- Door profile is warped or damaged

A reliable procedure:
1. Completely unscrew the hinges
2. Inspect existing screw holes and, if necessary, reinforce them with wooden dowels
3. Use new screws, preferably fine-thread screws for chipboard
4. Align the hinges carefully and tighten them securely

This procedure resolves nearly 90% of cases.
