ro-chen4924 Jun 2022 09:17Hello everyone, I would like to know if anyone has experience using moisture-resistant paint on IKEA KALLAX shelves? I plan to paint some of the compartments in my bathroom, where it can get quite humid at times, with moisture-resistant paint because I was concerned that regular varnishes or paints might peel off or not adhere well to the melamine resin surface.
My specific question is: Does moisture-resistant paint stick well to the rather smooth surface of the KALLAX shelves? Do I need to prepare the surface in any special way beforehand? And what kind of pretreatments (primers?) are recommended to ensure the paint adheres properly and remains water-resistant over time?
I would really appreciate any tips, experiences, or recommendations, as I would prefer not to have to repaint after just a few months or replace the shelf. Thanks in advance!

Moisture-resistant paint works on KALLAX if you thoroughly sand the surface (fine sandpaper). After that, be sure to apply an adhesion primer designed for smooth surfaces, otherwise the paint won’t stick. Then apply two thin coats of moisture-resistant paint, and it should be fine.

After that, make sure to treat it with a primer designed for smooth surfaces I can only confirm that. I did the same in my bathroom using an IKEA table. At first, I was unsure because the surface is so smooth. After sanding and priming with a special adhesion primer, the moisture-resistant paint has held up well — it’s been almost a year now, and the surface still looks good.
One more tip: Make sure you apply the paint in well-ventilated areas. I was a bit impatient and used it too soon, and there were still some faint odors. Other than that, the result is really satisfactory. Hope this helps you!

The key is proper sanding; I used a fine abrasive pad that’s not too coarse and only lightly roughens the surface. Then apply a bonding primer first, as moisture-resistant paint alone has very little adhesion.
However, don’t expect the surface to become extremely durable like a wooden shelf. If it’s exposed to direct and constant moisture, the paint may crack or peel. It should hold up fine for occasional exposure to relatively dry humidity.
I also recommend applying multiple coats with light sanding in between – this improves durability. And very important: let everything dry thoroughly. Good luck! 🙂
