Hello everyone,

I am planning to equip my Ikea Platsa cabinets with glass fronts because I want to break up the open look a bit and add more depth to the appearance. Since I couldn’t find any ready-made glass fronts for PLATSA doors at Ikea, I’m wondering: What glass front options are currently available, either officially or from third-party manufacturers, for Ikea PLATSA doors?

I’m not looking for standard kitchen fronts, but specifically options tailored to PLATSA that can be installed directly or adapted with moderate effort.

I’m interested in the different types of glass (e.g., clear, frosted, or tinted glass) as well as versions with frames or frameless. Are there systems with special glazing or unique fittings?

Maybe someone also knows good sources or practical tips for modifications, in case there isn’t an official solution.

Thanks in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

Hello vinjan,

Your question is very well posed and shows that you want to know exactly what options are available for glass fronts with Ikea PLATSA. Basically, Ikea itself does not offer glass fronts for PLATSA, which presents the same challenge for many users.

From my own experience and many reports in forums, I can say that there are mainly two approaches:
- Custom-made glass fronts ordered from a glazier or specialized furniture manufacturers. You can choose between clear, frosted, or tinted glass.
- DIY solutions: Some users take simple Ikea PLATSA doors with wooden frames and replace the panels with self-fitted glass panes. However, this requires some craftsmanship skills and the right tools.

Frosted or satin glass fronts are especially popular because they let some light through but conceal the contents.

Frameless options are harder to implement, as the panes usually require special clamp fittings, which Ikea does not supply.

If you like, I can provide links or more detailed information about sources for glass.

There are no official glass fronts for PLATSA directly from Ikea.

Alternatively, you can simply buy standard wooden frame doors and have glass installed by a glazier.

Of course, this depends on the exact door model.

Additional information:

Ikea does not offer standardized glass fronts for PLATSA doors, unlike other series such as METOD. Therefore, the market for glass fronts for PLATSA is currently limited to third-party suppliers or DIY solutions.

The most common options include:
- Glass inserts in custom-modified framed doors, usually made from MDF or wood
- Custom-made glass fronts with aluminum or wooden frames from specialized manufacturers
- Use of plexiglass or acrylic as a cost-effective alternative

It is also important to consider that the mounting of glass fronts should be adapted to the PLATSA system, as Ikea’s standard fittings do not accommodate glass frames. Therefore, additional adapters, hinges, or magnetic systems are often required for installation.

Finishing options include clear glass as well as frosted (satin) glass, tinted glass, or even textured glass.

In summary, a solution is generally possible, but with reduced convenience due to the lack of official accessories.

Thank you very much for the precise clarification; that helps me a lot.

I am now specifically interested in whether anyone has experience with external glass manufacturers who offer custom fronts for PLATSA, or if it is more practical to have glass cut separately and fit it into either custom or Ikea frame doors.

Also, it would be great if someone could share tips on which types of glass are particularly suitable regarding everyday use (e.g., scratch resistance, ease of cleaning) and safety aspects (e.g., tempered safety glass, laminated safety glass).

Maybe there are even experiences with modular solutions that reduce installation effort.

Thanks everyone!

Regarding types of glass:

- Tempered glass (ESG): Greatly increased resistance to breaking, breaks into small, less harmful pieces. Highly recommended for everyday furniture, safe to use.
- Laminated safety glass (VSG): Made of two glass panes with a film between them; if broken, shards stick to the film, making it even safer.
- Frosted glass: Partially matte, allows light to pass through but hides clutter.

For furniture doors, tempered glass is often sufficient, especially if high stress is not expected.

In terms of scratch resistance, glass generally provides a good base, but there are also coated variants. Clear and frosted glass are easy to clean, although smudges and fingerprints are more visible on clear glass.

Cleaning: Glass is generally low maintenance, but abrasive cleaners should be avoided to prevent surface damage.

Your advantage with custom-made fronts is that the glazier cuts the panes directly to the required dimensions and can install safety glass upon request.
