NarpinHello everyone, I am looking for a simple way to childproof Ikea Besta doors without much effort. My main concern is to secure the doors so that small children cannot access the contents unsupervised, but I also want a solution that doesn’t cause permanent visible damage or complicated installations. Are there any proven methods or products that are easy to install and can be removed without leaving any residue? It’s also important to me that adults can easily open the doors at any time. Looking forward to your advice!
Hey, really interesting topic! I had exactly the same problem with my built-in closets when my little one became more mobile. What I can recommend are these so-called child safety locks with a push mechanism that can be attached to the inside of the door. They are invisible from the outside and work really well. You simply press a small button to open the door, and otherwise, it stays securely locked. No drilling or residue at all! In my opinion, I found a real highlight for this 🙂 Definitely try it out, it makes daily life much more relaxed!
Hello Narpin, your concern is understandable, and I would like to discuss possible solutions in more detail. Basically, there are two main approaches: mechanical locks, which can be installed either on the outside or inside, and magnetic or clamp-based systems. With Ikea Besta, the doors are usually quite slim and don’t necessarily have much space inside for complex locking mechanisms.
- A commonly used method is adhesive child safety locks with clip and pressure mechanisms, which are mounted on the inside of the door. Advantage: no drilling required, can be removed without residue. Disadvantage: less secure if children are very clever or strong.
- Alternatively, small brackets or locks can be attached inside along the top edge, acting like an additional bolt. This requires some tools and may leave marks.
- Magnetic locks are also popular, especially if you want to keep the doors slightly apart in addition to securing them. These are usually glued onto the edges.
What is your situation regarding the door types? Smooth surfaces or framed? Do the doors open inward or outward? Are the cabinets mobile or fixed in place?
These details help to provide the most suitable recommendation.

Hello Narpin,
I’d like to give you a step-by-step guide on how to childproof and securely lock Ikea Besta doors with minimal effort and intervention:
- Step 1: Decide whether you prefer a solution mounted on the outside or inside of the doors. Locks mounted on the inside are usually less noticeable.
- Step 2: Get self-adhesive child safety locks, preferably ones with a push-release mechanism. You can stick these to the inner edge of the doors.
- Step 3: Thoroughly clean the adhesive surfaces (e.g. with isopropanol) before applying the locks. This helps the adhesive bond better.
- Step 4: After installation, check several times to ensure the door locks securely and can only be opened using the release mechanism.
- Step 5: If you want to remove the lock later, carefully warm it with a hairdryer and then loosen it to avoid leaving any adhesive residue.
Important: Make sure the locks do not pose a hazard to children (no sharp edges) and are easy for adults to operate. This way, you stay on the safe side without needing to modify or drill.
If you like, I can also send you recommendations for brands.

Are the cabinets movable or fixed in place? To add: Ikea Besta typically features furniture doors with smooth surfaces that open outward. The cabinets are usually fixed in place and rarely moved. This makes it easier to install clamp- or adhesive child safety locks.

Alternatively, screw-on locks with high child safety protection are sturdier but, in this case, too complicated to install.
