ᐅ IKEA Malm nightstand wobbles despite wall mounting – what to do now?

teokeremHello everyone,
I recently mounted an IKEA Malm nightstand on my bedroom wall to prevent wobbling. Despite using the included wall brackets and securely screwed mounting points, the nightstand still has noticeable movement, especially when I put some weight on it (for example, placing a phone or a lamp on it). The wall fixing is correct, and the screws, as far as I can tell, are firmly anchored in the wall (concrete).
My question is: what could be causing the wobbling despite wall mounting, and what methods or measures would you recommend to firmly secure the furniture? Are there alternative mounting methods or tips that IKEA users have found effective through experience?
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice!

Hey teokerem, that sounds really annoying, having a wobbly bedside table right in the middle of the bedroom 😊.
Have you maybe tried checking if the wobbling comes from the connections between the different parts of the bedside table? Sometimes the joints of the drawers or the back panel slip or loosen. Also, a few simple foam pads at the contact points where the back panel meets the wall can work wonders and even out any unevenness.
Also: sounds simple, but a bit of DIY adjustment can often help – things like cross braces or small wooden panels to additionally secure the bedside table to the wall. Good luck – don’t let the wobbly furniture get to you! 😉

Hello teokerem,
to thoroughly analyze your problem, it is important to understand the exact installation situation. Since you have mounted it on concrete walls, there should generally be no issues with load-bearing capacity, provided the anchors and screws comply with IKEA’s recommendations.
I would check the following points:
1. Screw type and anchor: Are they really heavy-duty anchors or just regular plastic anchors? The latter hold significantly less in concrete.
2. Back panel condition: The Malm nightstand usually has a thin back panel that offers little stability. It might already be slightly warped, which makes it difficult to achieve a firm connection to the wall.
3. Mounting points: IKEA typically specifies two to three wall fastenings. For extra stability, consider adding another support, such as a metal rail or bracket.
4. Load: How heavily is the nightstand loaded? With strong lateral forces, wall mounting can wobble if fastening is only at the top.
5. Gaps: Check if the nightstand really sits flush against the wall or if small gaps cause wobbling. A soft filler or double-sided mounting tape might help.
One way to improve stability could also be to install a thin, rigid board between the wall and nightstand as a support and additional stabilizer.
If you like, you can provide more details about the fastening and the load – then I can suggest more precise solutions.

Since you have fixed it into concrete walls, there should basically be no issues with the load-bearing capacityThat is basically correct. However, I have seen in several cases that even with proper installation, the thin back panel of Malm nightstands can cause problems. A nightstand often wobbles when the back panel detaches or the glue joint is not properly applied throughout.
I would suggest reinforcing the back panel from the inside with a thin wooden frame to stiffen the entire structure. This takes little time but adds a lot of stability and presses the back panel firmly against the wall and the mounting screws.
Additionally, you can use felt or rubber strips to compensate for minor unevenness on the wall, ensuring the furniture sits straight and does not tilt.

First, check if all the screws are fully tightened. I have checked several times; some screws are hard to reach, but I was especially careful with those.

Foam rubber pads at the contact points between the back panel and the wall can work wonders I will try that, sounds smart! Kinbu schrieb:
Reinforce the inside of the back panel with a thin wooden frame That sounds very interesting; I hadn’t considered adding such reinforcement before.

Are those heavy-duty anchors or just regular plastic wall plugs? I used standard plastic wall plugs since IKEA provides them. I guess I should upgrade, right? Thank you all very much; I will look into your tips and report back on how it went!
