Hello everyone, I have a specific question about the proper care of IKEA Hemnes furniture, especially with heavy daily use. I own several Hemnes pieces, such as dressers and nightstands, that are used frequently and sometimes quite intensively, for example, being opened and closed constantly. My question is: How can I care for and treat these wooden furniture items to keep the surface intact for as long as possible, minimize signs of wear, and make the furniture more resistant to abrasion, moisture, or scratches? Are there any special products or routines you would recommend, or things I should definitely avoid? I would greatly appreciate your practical experiences, tips, and advice.

Step 3: Preventing wear marks – Regularly checking and immediately removing wet glasses or liquids helps avoid unsightly stains.

An interesting viewpoint, but honestly, I think that’s a bit exaggerated. These pieces of furniture aren’t that delicate. Of course, a little care doesn’t hurt, but Hemnes is not high-maintenance. If you’re constantly afraid to use the table, it takes the fun out of it. Wood is a living material, and wear marks tell a story rather than turning it into a perfect display case. Maybe perfect upkeep is just too much effort and stressful.

If the surface becomes dull, you can gently sand it lightly with fine sandpaper (grit 400-500) and then properly oil it. Be careful with this method, or you might damage the protective layer.

This is exactly what I want to question: Should we always see ourselves as DIY experts or restorers, or accept that furniture will show signs of use? At some point, there has to be a limit to meticulous care. What do you think?

Thank you for your input, Connor. I understand the idea that furniture doesn’t have to stay completely flawless, but for me, the goal is a balance between use and maintaining the appearance. My furniture already looks quite worn after a relatively short period of use, and that bothers me visually.

How is the furniture subjected to daily wear, for example from children, pets, or heavy items?

In response to your question: yes, primarily drawers in the living room and bedroom, which are opened and closed at least twice daily. No children or pets, but rather heavy use from everyday items – such as books, decorations, and occasionally drinks.

That’s why I’m interested in whether waxes or oils based on solvent-free natural wax are even suitable, and how often I should reasonably treat the surfaces before they start to dull or peel?
