Hello everyone,

I have several BILLY shelves from IKEA that I generally like a lot – they are versatile and quite sturdy. However, after some time, I notice certain signs of wear, such as peeling edges, wobbly shelves, or scuffs on the sides. My question is: How can I extend the lifespan of BILLY shelves without having to switch to more expensive furniture alternatives? Are there any specific care or maintenance tips I should keep in mind?

I look forward to your experiences and practical advice, including suggestions on how to avoid common mistakes or reinforce certain parts. Thanks in advance!

Hello NODRA35,

Regarding your question on how to extend the lifespan of BILLY shelves, I would like to provide a structured answer:

1. Location: Make sure the shelf is not placed in areas that are constantly too damp or too hot. Moisture causes the particle boards to swell, especially damaging the bottom of the back panel.

2. Load: Distribute weight evenly and do not exceed the maximum weight limits recommended by IKEA per shelf, usually 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs).

3. Stabilization: Additional angle brackets or metal braces can significantly improve stability when shelves are heavily loaded. Small wooden strips attached to the shelves are also a good option.

4. Maintenance: Clean the shelf regularly with a slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh cleaning agents. To protect the edges, you can use edge protectors or corner guards.

5. Screw check: Occasionally check that all screws are securely tightened—loads and movement tend to loosen them over time.

6. Repair: Small damages on the edges can be concealed with wood fillers or special repair markers available at hardware stores.

I hope this helps you. If you frequently move the shelf, be careful when disassembling and reassembling it, as the material is sensitive to repeated assembly.

Hey NODRA35 🙂

I’ve upgraded my BILLY shelves using a simple “shoebox trick”: I just nailed thin metal braces to the back panel to prevent any wobbling. This makes the shelving unit much more stable and it also looks nicer 🙂

I also use small self-adhesive edge protectors that are actually designed for furniture. They help prevent damage if something bumps into the edges.

I totally agree with this! My biggest mistake was putting too much on the shelves – that’s not good for the boards. It’s better to add another shelf or distribute the weight more evenly 😉

With a bit of care and some basic DIY skills, BILLY shelves can last a really long time!

Hello everyone,

I would like to add that a common weak point of BILLY shelves is often the glued-in or hooked back panels. Especially when they come loose or are too thin, this can lead to instability. In such cases, it helps to secure the back panel additionally with small nails or extra screws on the sides. This significantly stabilizes the structure and extends its lifespan.

These protective strips are a simple and effective way to prevent mechanical damage to edges, especially if the shelf is placed in high-traffic areas.

I also recommend not only checking the fittings and screws but, if possible, replacing them with slightly higher-quality ones. The small side panel connectors particularly benefit from this. It pays off in the long run.

Hello NODRA35 and all other participants,

I would like to share some tips from my experience to help extend the lifespan of BILLY shelves, especially for users who may not be very experienced with DIY projects:

- When setting up on uneven floors, be sure to use small felt or plastic glides to level out irregularities and prevent the shelf from wobbling or damaging the feet.

- To avoid wobbling, you can also secure the shelf firmly to the wall using so-called furniture brackets, which can be found at hardware stores. This keeps the shelf stable without putting stress on the structure.

- If the shelves sag, there are reinforced shelving boards available from IKEA or third-party suppliers that offer significantly higher load capacity.

- Important: If you ever disassemble the shelf, be sure to keep all screws carefully and avoid damaging the holes, as the wood is very thin, and frequent assembly and disassembly reduce the load-bearing capacity.

I can confirm this; with such small repair kits, the shelves often look like new again, which also reduces the urge to buy new ones right away.

If you have any questions, I’m happy to help!
