teteoHello everyone,
I am currently planning to optimize the lighting in my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and would like to know the best way to approach this. Specifically, I’m interested in tips for choosing the right light sources—LED strips, spotlights, or other options—how to install the wiring discreetly and safely, and which light colors or color temperatures are most suitable for kitchen cabinet lighting.
Additionally, I would like to know if there are any recommended smart control options to manage the lighting automatically or via an app, depending on the need.
I already have some outlets and electrical components installed, but no experience with the actual installation of lighting in Metod cabinets. Who has practical experience, good advice, or recommendations? Many thanks!

Flexible LED strips with a 12V operating voltage are well suited for lighting Ikea Metod cabinets, as they are easy to install and generate little heat. It is important to choose a dimmable option to adjust the light intensity according to use. A color temperature around 2700K to 3000K provides a pleasant, warm white light that highlights the kitchen cabinets effectively.
For wiring, it is recommended to run cables behind the cabinet sides or back panels to avoid visible wires. When powering via an electrical outlet, flexible cables and possibly a discreet switch should be planned. Smart controls based on Zigbee or Wi-Fi are suitable if easy integration into a smart home system is desired.

In my view, the key to optimal lighting in a Metod cabinet is a balanced approach between functional illumination and a pleasant ambiance. Here are some relevant points:
- LED strips with high light output and even light distribution
- Color temperature between 2700K and 3500K for a warm, neutral light
- Installation under shelves or on the inner sides of the cabinet to illuminate the compartments
- Use of dimmers to adjust intensity according to different times of the day
- For wiring: drilling through the back panel or using mounting rails to neatly route cables
Smart controls with timers or motion sensors are convenient but not essential.

Smart controls based on Zigbee or Wi-Fi are well suited when simple integration into the smart home is available. That is an interesting point. However, one should consider whether the effort involved in smart controls for kitchen cabinet lighting, which is usually used only occasionally, truly offers a reasonable benefit. Additionally, the complexity of installation and later maintenance should not be underestimated. How do you handle this with similar setups? More minimalist or fully networked?

That is an interesting point.Exactly. I see the question the same way: If you use smart controls, you need at least a stable Wi-Fi connection or a Zigbee gateway; otherwise, it doesn’t make sense. A simple 12V LED power supply with a manual switch is often much more reliable and cost-effective.
Also, sometimes less is really more, especially in a kitchen where durability and ease of use are important.
