Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to optimize the lighting in my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and would like to know the best way to approach this. Specifically, I’m interested in tips for choosing the right light sources—LED strips, spotlights, or other options—how to install the wiring discreetly and safely, and which light colors or color temperatures are most suitable for kitchen cabinet lighting.
Additionally, I would like to know if there are any recommended smart control options to manage the lighting automatically or via an app, depending on the need.
I already have some outlets and electrical components installed, but no experience with the actual installation of lighting in Metod cabinets. Who has practical experience, good advice, or recommendations? Many thanks!

I equipped my Metod cabinet lighting with RGB LED strips and control everything via an app. The color changes are really convenient; depending on the time of day or mood, I can adjust the light color. The installation was a bit challenging, but with the Ikea connectors and some cable management, it was doable!
That’s true, but I really enjoy the smart home integration, and it feels modern! 😊

A simple 12V LED power supply with a manual switch is often much more reliable and cheaper.

For me, the light color is crucial: warm white around 3000K (approx. 5300°F) is ideal for the kitchen because it feels natural and comfortable. Avoid cold white LEDs, as they tend to create a sterile atmosphere.
Mounting directly on the metal profiles of the Metod cabinets works well, as there are often suitable attachment points there, and the cables can be easily concealed.

I would like to address the technical aspects of the installation: For LED strips, you should choose an IP20 rating or higher, especially in the kitchen due to humidity. Some models are also self-adhesive, which makes installation easier, but you should ensure that the adhesive tape sticks well to the Metod surfaces.
Another important point is heat dissipation: Although LEDs generate little heat, the base should be made of metal for better heat dissipation, which helps to extend the lifespan of the LEDs.
The wiring needs to be flexible enough to avoid major modifications in case of a cabinet replacement.

Regarding wiring: plastic cable ducts or clips help ensure neat and secure cable management behind the cabinets.
Thank you very much for your detailed contributions and suggestions! The advice on color temperature and wiring has been especially helpful for me.
I will probably use LED strips with 3000K and opt for a dimmable power supply solution, possibly without smart control, as the effort involved currently seems too great for me. The tips on mounting on cabinet profiles and routing behind the back panel are also very useful.
If anyone has specific experience with selecting dimmable LED power supplies for Metod cabinet lighting, I would appreciate brief recommendations.
