Hello everyone, I would like to specifically ask for experiences and opinions regarding the question: "How durable are the drawer slides in Ikea Brimnes dressers in long-term use?" I am particularly interested in how long-lasting and reliable the drawer slides used in the Brimnes dressers are over several years of daily use, especially when the drawers are regularly heavily loaded or frequently opened and closed. There are mixed opinions about affordable furniture and their sliding mechanisms. Therefore, I am especially curious about whether wear and tear such as warping, stiffness, or damage to the slides tend to occur after extended use. Are there differences between the various Brimnes models? It would also be interesting to know if readjustment or even a complete replacement of the drawer slides becomes necessary during long-term use. Thanks in advance for your detailed feedback and tips!

Hello Berk_ix, in general, the drawer slides in Ikea Brimnes furniture are designed for everyday use, meaning moderate loads and frequent opening and closing should not be an issue. From a technical perspective, Ikea usually uses full metal extension runners or plastic guides with metal tracks in this range. In long-term tests, the more affordable variants sometimes show stiffness due to deposits, dust, or wear on plastic parts. Warping of the drawers or misalignment is rather rare but can occur, especially with improper use or overloading. Replacement is definitely possible if you don’t mind the effort – Ikea provides the necessary spare parts. For long-term durability, I recommend regular cleaning of the slides and keeping the load moderate. Fine adjustment is possible, as most models have screw points for precise calibration.

I think you shouldn’t expect too much in terms of value for money with IKEA furniture – but so far, I’m pleasantly surprised with Brimnes. 😎 Of course, these aren’t high-end drawer slides, but after a few years you can just “oil” them or make some adjustments, and then they run quite smoothly again. A little maintenance and not putting them under heavy use, and they do their job well. So, perfectly adequate for everyday use! That said, I admit if I had to store heavy tools in them – well, that might be asking too much. Still, for clothes and similar items, they’ve been very sturdy for me so far.

Regarding the long-term test: There are reports from users who noticed increased resistance after about 3-5 years due to wear on plastic components. However, Brimnes drawer slides usually consist of simple metal runners that can achieve a longer service life with proper load conditions. A common cause of issues is contamination or improper loading, such as storing heavy items on one side of the drawer. It is advisable to ensure even weight distribution during installation and use, and to clean the slides occasionally. A complete replacement of the slides should only be considered if there are mechanical problems.

I can confirm this. In my pair of Brimnes dressers, after around 4 years, at least one third of the drawers show slight stiffness. The cause is usually worn plastic rollers or a bent metal track. I also suspect that increased humidity causes slight corrosion on the metal parts, which affects smooth movement. I carefully cleaned, lightly oiled, and adjusted the guides, which only helped temporarily. A permanent replacement of the guides would be technically possible but somewhat labor-intensive since the assembly is a bit fiddly. This suggests a solid middle ground in the design; for higher demands, the systems are suboptimal.

After about 5 years, I replaced the drawer slides on my Brimnes dresser. It’s running smoothly again now. Tip: Get original replacement parts from Ikea and make sure all plastic components are properly seated when installing.
