Hello everyone,

I recently broke the doors on my Ikea Kallax shelf. The hinges no longer hold, and the edges of the wood are already somewhat frayed. Before I replace the doors completely, I’m wondering if there are any practical repair ideas to make the doors functional again, ideally with some DIY skills but without having to buy new doors.

Has anyone ever done a sustainable or simple repair on Kallax doors? Which materials, techniques, or tools work particularly well – for example, glue, filler, reinforcements, or specific screws?

Thanks for your tips!

Hi,

if the hinges are loose, it often helps to secure the screws with wood glue and toothpicks to provide better grip. Alternatively, you can use slightly larger screws.

For repairing the Kallax doors, a combination of wood glue and wood filler is suitable to stabilize frayed edges. After curing, the surface can be sanded, and the hinges reattached using appropriate screws. It is important to ensure that the screws are not too short so they can secure a firm hold in the wood.

The following approach has proven effective: First, fill any frayed areas with wood filler or epoxy wood repair compound and allow it to dry thoroughly. Then, carefully sand the surface and install hinges using longer screws to avoid damaging the wood again. Additionally, small battens can be added on the inside to stabilize the door.

That sounds interesting; I wouldn’t have thought screws could be saved that way.

Would you recommend wood filler or epoxy instead? The latter sounds harder and possibly more durable.

What exactly do you mean by that? Some kind of internal reinforcement? Does it work well without looking too complicated?

I would like to propose the idea that repairing Kallax doors is often a waste of time. The material is generally not designed to be repaired, but rather replaced. Of course, there are hacks using wood glue and filler, but why not consider reinforcing the doors externally with a film or even on the inside with a thin panel? This immediately provides more stability and also improves the appearance.

I can fully support RENMA’s idea with strips, but I assume you do not want a makeshift solution that is immediately visible. Sustainable and attractive are two very different things.
