Hello everyone,

some time ago, I bought a BILLY bookcase from IKEA, which has proven to be very practical. Unfortunately, one of the edges on one of the shelves has come off – it not only looks unattractive but also affects the stability.

My question is: What repair methods are available to restore a damaged edge on a BILLY bookcase as easily as possible, but also permanently?

I am interested not only in quick fixes but also in solutions that largely preserve the appearance and represent a reasonably professional repair. Perhaps someone knows of suitable repair kits, adhesives, or techniques to make the bookcase fully functional again.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello Drago33,

Regarding your question: “What repair methods are available to easily but permanently fix a ripped edge on a BILLY shelf?” I’d be happy to provide a detailed answer, as I have done several small furniture repairs before.

First, you should carefully examine the type of edge: Is it veneered or laminated? BILLY shelves usually consist of particleboard with a melamine surface and plastic edge banding. If the edge is completely torn off, I recommend the following procedure:

1. Cleaning and preparation: Remove all loose parts and thoroughly clean the broken area from dust and dirt. Use a slightly damp cloth, then let it dry.

2. Adhesive choice: For a strong bond, wood glue or PVA-based edge banding glue is recommended. Alternatively, a high-quality construction adhesive also works well. If the edge is made of plastic (ABS edge), a neoprene-based contact adhesive is often better.

3. Fixation: It is important to clamp or weigh down the pieces firmly during drying so the glued joint does not shift or lift.

4. Filling and sanding: If the edge is damaged or not flush anymore, you can fill small gaps with wood filler or repair putty. After drying, sand carefully.

5. Surface treatment: Depending on whether the surface is unfinished or coated, you can blend the repaired area with suitable paint, clear lacquer, or a color-matched furniture marker.

If you tape around the edge and cover it with a precisely cut, original ABS edge band (available online or at hardware stores), you can achieve a professional finish.

Another option is to completely replace the edge by purchasing a new shelf board and repurposing the old boards for other projects.

One more question: Is the edge completely broken off or just chipped at the front?

I’m happy to provide more precise advice if you describe your specific situation in more detail!

To repair the torn edge on the BILLY shelf, I recommend:

- Using edge glue
- Clamping it in place until everything is dry
- Filling small gaps with wood filler
- Touching up with colored paint or a furniture marker if needed

This usually results in a stable and neat repair.

Hi Drago33 and all other BILLY fans! 😊

BILLY shelves are great, but those plastic edges can really cause trouble if they come off. I’ve come up with a “creative” solution myself and can share two quick tips that also work well combined:

1. Get edge banding from a hardware store (usually sold in rolls) – it’s actually designed to fix edges like these. You just need a hairdryer to warm up the adhesive and stick the band on.

2. If the edge is badly damaged, a little wood filler can work wonders – but don’t apply too much, or it will become uneven. After it dries, sand it lightly to make it smooth, and adjust the look with a furniture touch-up marker (colors are often available online).

This method works perfectly for me too, so I can only agree. After just an hour or two, everything is set and feels like a brand-new shelf! 😉

Good luck, and no need to get frustrated! BILLY lives on! 🙂
