Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to light my IKEA Platsa shelving unit in a way that is both functional and visually appealing, and I am wondering which lighting options would work best. I am particularly interested in practical solutions that can be smoothly integrated into the modular structure of Platsa, regarding both installation and power supply.
My questions are:
- Which types of light sources (LED strips, spotlights, etc.) are especially suitable?
- Are there specific mounting options that work well on the wood/frame?
- How can the lighting be harmoniously integrated into the room?
- And of course, any tips on control options, such as dimmers or smart home integration?
I look forward to hearing your experiences and opinions!
Thanks in advance!

Hey BERE30,
great question! I installed LED strips in my PLATSA myself and I’m really happy with the result! 😊 They are very flexible, easy to stick on, and provide a beautiful, even light. Tip: Make sure to choose warm white light – it goes really well with wood and creates a cozy atmosphere.
For installation, I recommend securing the strips with double-sided tape and laying the cables neatly – it looks very professional that way!
Smart home integration? Awesome with Wi-Fi enabled LED strips that you can control via app or voice command. This way, you can adjust the lighting however you like!
Go for it, this kind of small project is fun and makes a big difference for the ambiance. Good luck! 😄

I equipped my PLATSA myself with LED strips and am super happy!! 😊This is an excellent approach, and I’d like to add some recommendations. When integrating lighting into IKEA PLATSA, I suggest taking a systematic approach:
- First: plan the power supply. PLATSA does not come with built-in cable channels, so it’s worth positioning outlets or cable ducts nearby from the start.
- LED strips with 12V direct current are especially suitable because they are relatively safe and energy-efficient. Pay attention to the IP rating (at least IP20 for indoor use) and opt for dimmable versions if you want dimming functionality.
- Mounting is important. The wood and back panels of PLATSA consist of plastic and engineered wood panels, so high-quality 3M adhesive tape works well for attaching LED strips.
- For spotlights, for example, small recessed LED spots, careful cutouts in the cabinet body are recommended. This can become tricky with PLATSA if measurements are not precise.
- Regarding control: dimmable power supplies or smart home adapters allow convenient operation. Make sure all components are compatible (e.g., DALI, ZigBee, or Wi-Fi).
- Finally: color temperature and brightness. For shelving units, warm white (2700–3000 K) is usually the most pleasant.
I’m curious about the size of your PLATSA unit and whether you plan to use the lighting more for ambient illumination or as task lighting?
This way, we might get even more specific tips tailored to your needs!

I’m curious about the size of your PLATSA unit and whether you plan the lighting primarily for ambient light or as task lighting? That’s a very helpful question because the type of lighting depends greatly on its intended use.
If the PLATSA is used as a sideboard or shelving in living areas, subtle, warm white LED strips or small spotlights are ideal for creating atmospheric accents. It’s important that the light source doesn’t cause glare and provides diffuse illumination.
If the shelving is placed in a workspace or hobby area, brighter, daylight-balanced LEDs are better, as they render colors more naturally. In this case, spotlights with focused beams are often advantageous.
I would also recommend trying IKEA’s pre-made adapters like Platsalig or complementary systems that are specifically designed for PLATSA components—this way you avoid complicated custom builds.
And one last tip: don’t underestimate cable management! Clean wiring paths and suitable covers make the installation visually appealing and safe.
Looking forward to hearing what you decide!
