Hello everyone,
I will be installing a new floor in all rooms in the next few days. I have chosen the Haro Disano design floor for this. My reasons were the design (plank size and appearance) as well as the maintenance effort and durability. The floor is also PVC-free and free of plasticizers, which is quite important. It features an HDF (high-density fiberboard) core with a relatively thin cork underlayment.
Now my question is whether there is any reason not to install an additional impact sound insulation layer. I was thinking of the Icutec Schallschutzbahn Exquisit (equivalent to Alujet Sonic 3000). It is only 1.5mm (0.06 inches) thick but very dense and heavy (3kg/sqm (0.61 lb/sqft)). I am very convinced by it.
My question is whether there could be problems since the floor already has a highly compressed cork layer. Will the two underlays interfere with each other, or could there be movement issues? As mentioned, the Icutec/Alujet is very dense.
I would be very grateful for any tips and advice!

Hi, have you already checked the installation instructions? Here is an excerpt from the manufacturer’s guide: “Since Disano already includes an integrated cork underlayment, no additional underlayment should be installed.”
I know it’s the same with Meister Designboden DS, as the cork layer underneath is meant to serve that purpose. I personally installed Meister Designboden at home, and it’s great.
PS: I really appreciate that you avoided choosing vinyl flooring (which would never receive a Blue Angel certification). I always feel uneasy when customers select such products, especially when I think about my baby crawling on the floor with bare hands, possibly bare legs, licking the dust that absorbs and emits plasticizers, or breathing in contaminated dust like an adult would. The same concerns apply to pets. It’s similar with carpets and upholstery as well, though usually in the backing rather than the surface layer.

.... I always feel quite uneasy when customers choose something like this from us, thinking about my baby crawling on the floor with bare hands, possibly bare legs, licking off the dust on it which of course absorbs the emitted plasticizers and then breathes in the contaminated dust (just like an adult does), and the same applies to pets... It’s just as bad with carpets and couch covers, though usually affecting the underlying fabric rather than the surface...You do realize that if you raise your child(ren) with such an overly sterile approach, they will sooner or later develop allergies? From the way you describe vinyl flooring, in my opinion you shouldn’t even step outside.

Based on how you describe vinyl flooring, I don’t think you should be too confident, in my opinion.
Regards, BauexperteSo what is it now, chemicals against chemicals? We don’t have Sagrotan here (which among other things contains benzalkonium chloride), because those products are tested on animals, something we largely avoid, and they are harmful to pets anyway... Unfortunately, I don’t own any other chemical household cleaners either.
If you want to expose your children to as many toxic mixtures as possible, that’s your choice. My children are perfectly healthy, rarely get sick (the forest kindergarten probably helps with their immune system), and they play outside in the garden almost every day, are allowed to eat earthworms, and often visit the farmer next door... But I don’t feel the need to expose them to more chemicals (none of the floors passed the Blue Angel certification, which tests for these emissions) than they already encounter nowadays (clothes, toys, etc.)...
I wouldn’t put too much trust in facts from studies regarding emissions either.
I will leave my professional expertise here as a former floor installer who switched to the building materials industry for health reasons. It looks like you will be the expert here from now on.

Bauexperte20 Jan 2015 16:43Hello,
Hola – did you start the day in a bad mood, or is your general attitude always set to “be on guard”?
To clarify – I’m constantly surprised by today’s generation of parents; nothing is more important than cleanliness (disinfection might be a better term). Since you are so focused on facts and studies, you must be familiar with the publications by researchers from Marburg? Then you will surely understand why I stumbled over the term “decontaminated dust”; that’s quite something. Especially in connection with floor coverings which – produced in Germany – are no longer allowed to contain harmful plasticizers. So I would have at least expected a similar comment from you, especially since you seem to be an expert.
But if your children are allowed to get dirty and are healthy, I’m happy for that
Still a bit sensitive?
Well, if a little pushback like this makes you say things like that, you might really be better off avoiding forums altogether. There’s a lot on offer here, but it’s neither a wish fulfillment service nor a comfort group.
Best regards, Bauexperte
