Hello,
we will soon receive the handover of our new build and want to install vinyl flooring on the upper floors.
We plan to install the vinyl flooring ourselves and want to lay it as a floating floor (on the new screed).
We do not want to glue it down.
Unfortunately, it is not easy to find the right vinyl flooring.
What types of vinyl flooring are there and how do they differ? (I’m a bit lost here)
Rigid vinyl
Solid vinyl
Click vinyl
Rigid core vinyl
Are there any others?
(I will exclude the types that require gluing.)
Impact sound insulation:
All types of vinyl flooring are available with or without integrated impact sound insulation.
Vinyl with integrated impact sound insulation is easier to install, but what is really better?
Manufacturers:
Which manufacturers would you recommend?
In my search, I came across the following manufacturers:
HORI
Parador
Wineo
Are there other top vinyl manufacturers? What do you think of the brands mentioned? Is vinyl from these manufacturers reliable?
Please feel free to share more recommendations.
What else should be considered when buying vinyl flooring?
What should you look for in the locking system?
Thank you very much for your help.

I always wonder what qualifications the specialists have who sell these types of flooring and also offer installation as an option. Didn’t they provide you with satisfactory answers?
So far, I have had good experiences with solid vinyl flooring (including in wet areas / offices).
Rigid vinyl had a pretty poor scratch resistance in the sample I tested, but that definitely depends on the manufacturer and type of flooring.
I have always used a separate impact sound insulation layer (check the technical data sheet to see what density and thickness are allowed).
Dogs with claws are always “noisy” on vinyl!
Until now, I have only installed click or glue-down vinyl myself, but I also know about fully glued materials (usually only 2-3mm thick instead of 5-8mm for click vinyl).
Fully glued vinyl most recently cost about €70 per m² including material and installation.

Gooosee15926 Jan 2023 12:40@i_b_n_a_n Yes, dog claws are quieter on vinyl than on laminate or hardwood.
Hardwood also discolors when it comes into contact with dog urine (which can happen occasionally with puppies, illness, or older dogs), so hardwood was definitely out.
We will definitely install the flooring ourselves, which is why it will be a floating floor.
I have read that rigid vinyl is actually very scratch-resistant, even compared to solid vinyl (since it has a rigid core).
However, rigid vinyl is supposed to be louder than solid vinyl because it is harder.
Choosing the right flooring is not easy, and since it stays in place for a long time, making the wrong choice can be frustrating for a long time 😀

Gooosee15927 Jan 2023 07:10@Reggert It definitely looks good.
This is meant for gluing, and as a layperson, I wouldn’t trust myself to do that, so I would prefer to install it as a floating floor.
What do you think about PVC-free luxury vinyl flooring?
Basically, it’s still vinyl but uses only natural plasticizers.
Should you definitely choose a PVC-free luxury vinyl floor, or is a standard vinyl floor from a reputable manufacturer (which nowadays also does not contain any harmful plasticizers) sufficient?
Is PVC-free and certifications like Blue Angel mainly just marketing, or does it actually make a difference?

It was more as a reference because nothing specific was mentioned about the type, and I couldn’t find anything about it on the manufacturer’s website either.
Where are you planning to buy the flooring? We went to Hammer, and the staff there can usually explain the differences quite clearly.

Gooosee15927 Jan 2023 08:42We have already been to a laminate warehouse near us, but they couldn't properly explain or advise us.
We would probably buy it online with free delivery.
First, I wanted to find out which type of vinyl is best for us, then look at which manufacturer is good and offers good value for money, and finally where to order it.
