In the living areas of our new build, we are planning to install a design floor. Less than a year ago, I moved into a new build office where the same design floor was installed. I really like it, and despite office chair wheels and public foot traffic, I find the floor flawless. It belongs to abrasion class T and has a colorfastness rating of 6 or higher. Price: 29.90 €/sqm (3 USD/sq ft approx.). It doesn’t seem expensive to me. Is this type of floor recommended for residential living areas? With underfloor heating, is it possible or advisable to place a carpet on top, or is that not recommended?

That probably depends on who you ask. My heating engineer says no. The floor supplier says, of course. The answer is the same as with the question about floating installation.
I am currently doing some research myself. I have already decided for me, if possible, not to use HDF substrates, because if moisture gets in, it can cause internal decay.

What exactly are HDF joists?

HDF = high-density fiberboard = high-density fiberboard

Basically, glued wood chips.
It is often used as a substrate panel to prevent thin plastic from warping. But since it is ultimately wood-based, it does not handle moisture well, which is actually a key advantage of vinyl flooring.
So for me (if you have accepted the idea of plastic as a floor covering in living areas at all), only solid plastic flooring makes sense. You can even install that in the bathroom.

“Plastic” for 30€ on the floor? No, I wouldn’t recommend that.

Yes, that is a point I still don’t quite understand. The material is usually too expensive and should be much cheaper.
