Hello everyone,
we gutted our main staircase. Previously, there were 3-4 thick marble slabs that protruded about 3-4cm (1-1.5 inches) to the front and side. Since we installed underfloor heating with different layers, we need to adjust and level the stair heights anyway.

Visually, I like these overlay steps. Instead of gray, the color could be more beige/cream/sandy.
1. You hardly find steps around 20mm (0.8 inches) thick, or am I using the wrong search term? Our dimensions would be 100x30cm (39x12 inches). They could be slightly larger so they can be cut down. Could terrace slabs be used here if needed? Window sills would probably be too slippery.
2. In the picture, there is no base or stair riser cladding. Would a plastered version or a trim be very prone to dirt? (Main staircase).

Hello everyone,
we have been searching for the last few days. My wife sent me a picture showing that she actually prefers the staircase to be more "clean."
Unfortunately, our current concrete steps are only 27cm (11 inches) deep. The idea with placing a board on top was to let it overhang by about 2–3cm (around 1 inch), so that the depth would reach approximately 30cm (12 inches).
1. How critical would you consider stair treads with a depth of 27cm (11 inches)?
Depending on how the 27cm (11 inches) depth is regarded, I would need to see how to adjust the current concrete steps accordingly.
At the moment, the steps look a bit rough because the heights had to be evened out, see picture.

hanghaus202313 Feb 2024 11:5627cm (11 inches) is fine. If you let the steps overhang, it’s still just 27cm (11 inches). Only the tread itself will then be 30cm (12 inches). The walking experience is basically the same.

To me, these are much more important questions than asking for the general opinion.By the way, 27cm (11 inches) is a common dimension and fully covered by DIN standards – whether it’s suitable is up to you to decide.

Schorsch_baut13 Feb 2024 12:26At 2cm (0.8 inches) thickness, most softer stones are no longer suitable. In that case, almost only granite is an option. We encountered this issue with the outdoor stairs, where we wanted to replace the horrible pink granite with slate or basalt to match the stairs to the landing. Basalt and slate would have needed to be installed with an overhang at a minimum thickness of 3cm (1.2 inches). We will probably choose a dark gray granite now.
