Hello everyone,
we gutted our main staircase. Previously, there were 3-4 thick marble slabs that protruded about 3-4cm (1-1.5 inches) to the front and side. Since we installed underfloor heating with different layers, we need to adjust and level the stair heights anyway.

Visually, I like these overlay steps. Instead of gray, the color could be more beige/cream/sandy.
1. You hardly find steps around 20mm (0.8 inches) thick, or am I using the wrong search term? Our dimensions would be 100x30cm (39x12 inches). They could be slightly larger so they can be cut down. Could terrace slabs be used here if needed? Window sills would probably be too slippery.
2. In the picture, there is no base or stair riser cladding. Would a plastered version or a trim be very prone to dirt? (Main staircase).

Most softer stones are not suitable at 2cm (0.8 inches) thickness. At that thickness, almost only granite is an option.Or porcelain stoneware in all desired finishes.jens.knoedel schrieb:
How big are your feet? How does it feel for you to walk on the stairs? To me, these are much more critical questions than asking the opinion of the general public. We once paid attention to this in various apartment buildings. I wear size 42 shoes and my wife wears size 39. In our current rental apartment, the stairs are 29cm (11.4 inches). At the neighbor’s place, they are 27cm (10.6 inches). The 27cm (10.6 inches) steps are okay too, even if you sometimes feel like you are tiptoeing.
But both sizes work. We would now decide based on the tile design. We consulted with the tile installer and several tile suppliers.
- If we choose regular tiles without an overhang, then either:
- A stainless steel edge strip must be installed (not very attractive), or
- The tile (tread + riser) must be cut at a 45° angle, which is time-consuming, or
- Special stair tread tiles must be purchased (not available from every tile manufacturer)
- Use terrace slabs (30x120x2 cm (12x47x0.8 inches)) installed with an overhang (inexpensive, but edges may not look good because although the edges are fully dyed, the finish does not exactly match the surface. (With 47 steps at 30€ each = 1410€))
- There are terrace slabs that can be ordered with a polished or beveled front edge. However, costs per step would be 135€. For 47 steps, that would be 6345€
