ᐅ The front-facing windows are suboptimal and need to be improved.

Hello,
we have already started construction and the shell is complete. Unfortunately, looking back now, I find the front elevation bothers me. Even during the planning phase, I wasn’t completely convinced, but I was repeatedly told that the house should be designed from the inside out. We have now decided to accept changes costing up to 4,000 EUR to avoid living with this discomfort for a lifetime. Unfortunately, the changes can only be made after the building acceptance. Many things can be done by my husband, who already has a lot of DIY experience. Every time I look at it, I feel like giving up, and I hope you can save the façade with some great ideas.
I’m uploading a few pictures.
Thank you very much in advance

Why never again floor-to-ceiling windows? Did you have bad experiences?

Personally (in the rental apartment): I miss having little plants on the windowsill (yes, you can place or hang things next to or in front of floor-to-ceiling windows, but it’s different or has to be arranged differently). In the office, we probably would have arranged things differently with “normal” windows compared to the floor-to-ceiling ones (placing the desk sideways in front of floor-to-ceiling windows feels a bit odd). In the bedroom, we currently have some furniture placed in front (or not in front of the actual floor-to-ceiling section, which is divided and one side has a fixed bottom part), and we don’t notice the glass area at all there. Also, the fall protection on our windows already reduces quite a bit of light (although there are various options). Overall, my impression is that someone with an eye for design and such could probably incorporate it better into the room, but for my husband and me, who aren’t very skilled in that area, it turned out to be a bit challenging…

That said, we will have floor-to-ceiling windows again in the house (because it’s a townhouse and there’s no choice), and it was not a decisive factor for us. But if I had a completely free design choice, I would have avoided them.

@mayglow
The upper room is a child's bedroom, and the other two also have floor-to-ceiling windows, so I thought it would be fair to give the child one as well. Actually, the floor-to-ceiling window was planned for the office on the ground floor, but my husband didn’t want one there. My son wanted it, my husband didn’t, and that’s how this came about 😀 I’ll see how it works out in everyday life, I’m not there yet.
I’m sure there will be more things about the house that will bother me.

@Offtopic would you place the top floor-to-ceiling window at the bottom in the office? Why will you never have floor-to-ceiling windows again? Did you have bad experiences?
They simply bother me upstairs. You can look outside, but people can also look inside just as easily. Additionally, it takes up space when arranging the desk and furniture. In summer, the roller shutter has to be completely closed, so you don’t benefit from it at all.

@Offtopic We have one floor-to-ceiling window and one half-height window. My sister always told me not to have floor-to-ceiling ones. Looking back, I don't think it was necessary on the street-facing side. But it bothers me less than the bathroom window for the parents, so I won’t have it removed… On Monday, the window sills were also installed.

Because people can look right at your bare backside from outside.
Do yourself a favor and don’t take everything others say too seriously. If I had to follow all the advice I hear, I would have to invest an extra €100,000 in my house.

I have no excitement left at all after realizing how many things we didn’t consider.
You’re letting yourself be influenced too much. At first, you or you both decide, then your sister says something different, and you become unhappy.

Now you start reading here in the forum and only see mistakes in your decisions. But that’s not the case. Of course, there are guidelines, but you don’t have to strictly stick to them. Your small bathroom window serves the purpose that people from the street don’t see everything when you shower. It’s the perfect window for a Christmas star light or a small lamp. Turn it around and enjoy this special window that makes your house unique. Or paint the window frame dark red on the outside so others see it as something special too.

How could the situation still be saved? I really only need constructive criticism because I already feel the house is so badly done and I’m pessimistic that I can’t handle any more negative input. I need your help.

I didn’t imagine building like this. Above all, I never thought I would end up disliking it this much.
You’re not at the end yet. The end of building your home is when you have your beautiful floor installed, the walls nicely painted, and your furniture arranged comfortably. You’ll have room for your three children and plenty of joy and laughter in the house.

I really regret building a house.
Look at it this way: you are among the few who are able to build their own home.

As soon as we have more information, we will also put more pressure on.
Why? Right now, you are putting most of the pressure on yourself, possibly comparing houses here in the forum that cost twice as much on plots twice the size. Then there are countless forum members who see expensive extras as a must-have and, without fully understanding the housebuilding process, consider a house without all those frills worthless.
Focus on the interior design instead: make the children’s rooms nice, choose a kitchen you love. Buy accessories in your favorite color for the living room, and look for a stylish dining room light that brings you joy.

@ypg
What you say is all true. I get influenced very easily, and that is extremely exhausting. I also knew that the construction phase would be very difficult for me because you have to make so many decisions and then doubt everything afterwards. Right now, everything revolves around the build… I hope that will ease off. I will try to turn things around the way you suggest. And on the floor-to-ceiling window facing the street, I’ll put a reflective film 😉
