ᐅ Storage Room vs. Under-Stair Closet – Is It Practical or Just a Trend?

Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I came across these stair cupboards and found them very practical at first glance.

Now we are considering replacing our regular storage space under the stairs with a stair cupboard.

Since it will be custom-made by a carpenter, it comes with a certain cost.

Who has such a stair cupboard and can share their experience? Was it a worthwhile investment, or did it not meet expectations in the end?

The image is provided as an example; this is roughly what we had in mind.

Modern white staircase with glass railing and open cupboards underneath with clothes and shoes.

If you don’t absolutely need that storage room in the hallway, I would leave the staircase open. An open straight staircase simply looks great!

Yes, that is of course the ideal if the staircase can serve as a stylistic element.
@Hangman for me, hanging coats openly under the stairs would be a definite no-go and should be avoided.

We had a carpenter make something like this. In both the children’s rooms as well as the bedroom from the first floor up to the attic.
They are used there, among other things, as wardrobes.
We find it very practical.
I’ve linked it down below. You can see some pictures there.

So, we finally have a handrail on the stairs:

and the railings on the two stair cupboards in the children’s room and bedroom leading to the attic are finally installed as well:

The carpenter also built a bathroom cabinet into the niche for us.

That looks nice. But for this house, those extra 3000–5000€ (about 3,200–5,300 USD) really don’t make much difference. 😉

Our quote is 6900€ (about 7,300 USD) without painting, which my brother-in-law (a master painter) will do.

I don’t find it attractive. The whole staircase looks bulky and gets lost that way.
I think a simple drywall partition with a chest of drawers or a console table in front looks more harmonious. Then the staircase could still serve as a storage space.

I’m more trying to figure out how practical it really is, but I don’t think it looks ugly.

An open staircase is not an option for us; we need the storage space.

Can you tell me how practical you have found it?

In other words, has the cabinet proven useful compared to a storage room, or is it just an expensive way to store shoes and coats?

You answered your own question about its practicality 😀

Regarding your question, I can’t really comment because we don’t use it as a cloakroom; it actually functions as our stairs to the attic. As a wardrobe, it works great.
Why not as a cloakroom?

As for our cloakroom, it is a custom build made from Pax units…

I just wrote a nice long reply about everything the closet could offer and then deleted it...

It’s not worth 7k to me 🙂

That looks really great, thanks!
