Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I came across these stair cupboards and found them very practical at first glance.

Now we are considering replacing our regular storage space under the stairs with a stair cupboard.

Since it will be custom-made by a carpenter, it comes with a certain cost.

Who has such a stair cupboard and can share their experience? Was it a worthwhile investment, or did it not meet expectations in the end?

The image is provided as an example; this is roughly what we had in mind.

Modern white staircase with glass railing and open cupboards underneath with clothes and shoes.

Looks nice. With this house, the 3000-5000€ really doesn't make much of a difference anyway. 😉

I don’t find it attractive. The whole staircase looks bulky and gets lost because of it.
A simple drywall with a dresser or console table in front of it seems more harmonious to me. Then the staircase could still serve as a storage area.

If you don’t absolutely need this storage room in the hallway, I would leave the staircase open. An open straight staircase simply looks great!

Of course, it depends on the room. If it’s big enough or if the staircase is located in a living area, you can do that. Otherwise, I agree with @ypg and @AMNE3IA. We originally planned to use it as a wardrobe as well, but our entrance hall measures only 2.6 x 3.9 m (including the stairs) (8.5 x 12.8 ft), and that would have been too bulky. Also, it’s quite impractical to have to open doors all the time. And storing wet jackets inside a closed cabinet doesn’t make much sense either. We had a floating drawer chest built, with a regular wardrobe rail above it. The bottom of the drawers is a grate, which allows shoes to be ventilated (or they usually just stand underneath anyway).

Under stairs: wardrobe with coats, wooden bench with drawers, shoes underneath.

Hallway under the stairs: jackets hanging on the left, wooden bench with items, shoes underneath.

Not everyone lives in Sauerland, where jackets are almost wet all year round. 😀
