Hello everyone in the forum!

Maybe you have an idea for a cover for the base of our 3 x 3 meter (10 x 10 feet) cantilever umbrella. Currently, it is held down by four concrete slabs, but they don’t look very attractive and the kids often stub their toes on them. We are now considering getting a cover (so far we have only found unattractive wooden ones or ones costing more than €250), or using fillable plastic boxes. However, I’ve often read that these tend to leak after about a year or are too light, causing the umbrella to tip over.

A permanently buried base is not an option yet, as we are still looking for the right position.

Do you perhaps have some good ideas?

Thank you!

Best regards,

After 2 years with a patio umbrella, I can tell you that you never find the right position on a terrace.

The area is simply too large and the umbrella too small.

That’s why we switched to a 5x6m (16x20 ft) sunshade sail, at least until we save enough money for a permanent roof.

A cover for the four concrete slabs? What’s the point of that?
I would attach corner protectors for furniture at the corners. It still hurts, but not as much.

Yes, it hurts when you catch yourself on something—adults in a hurry do that too, no matter what it is. It’s painful learning experience—you learn to be attentive and careful for a while. I speak from experience. Life is a learning curve 🙂

Cladding with Douglas fir decking boards, all mounted on rollers…
(Try searching online… Links are usually removed…)

Primarily, it’s really about the appearance. You put effort into making the patio inviting, and right in the middle there are four 50cm by 50cm (20in by 20in) gray concrete slabs. Practical, but not attractive. 😉

True, building something yourself out of decking boards until a good spot is found would be an option. Probably the best in terms of price and performance.

You could replace the panels with marble or granite. Round off the edges.
