ᐅ Which garden fence provides privacy screening?

Hello

We have purchased a semi-detached house.

After completion, we want to install a fence around our garden (we hope to have friendly neighbors who will share the costs).

We need about 55m (180 feet) of fencing.

We want the entire fence to have privacy screening and be between 1.6 and 1.8m (5.2 and 5.9 feet) high (this is legally allowed in our area).

Which type of fence would you recommend? We had thought about the standard welded wire mesh fence panels, but the privacy strips for these are quite expensive.

Is there a more affordable option, possibly with a different type of fence?

Requirements for the fence:

No maintenance (so no wood)
Privacy screening
Height between 1.6 and 1.8m (5.2 and 5.9 feet)
Must go all the way to the ground (to prevent our dog, including puppies, from escaping)

Thank you very much for your help

This fence situation once again shows how straightforward my suburb is.

New Development Area
The plots are subdivided by the land developer, with roads and utility connections completed before the plots are sold. There are usually no sidewalks; a 2m (6.5 ft) strip belongs to the municipality, and tall bushes are not allowed.

My plot has a fence on three sides, 1.8m (6 ft) high, made of colorbond material. The color is chosen by the developer; currently, they are dark anthracite and may look like this.

Long gray metal fence in front of a single-family house with green lawn.

Costs are always split 50/50. This year, we asked one of our neighbors if he was interested in a new fence (like in the picture). No problem. He benefits more than we do because most of my fence is hidden by bushes. He can see his fence because of the pool.

This fence is behind the bushes on the left back side. Although I initially, coming from Germany, found fencing like a cage terrible, today I am very glad it exists. I can’t see what my neighbor is doing in the garden, whether it is neglected or not, and there are no fence-related issues. Privacy is important to me. All the houses face the street. Easy.

To the right, behind the bushes, are the terrace and the house.

@evelinoz ... on fairly large plots like yours, where the fence is basically hidden, that might work ... but on plots of 250 to 500 sqm (2700 to 5400 sq ft) it already looks very much like cage keeping.

Our neighbor now has one of those double wire mesh fences. A large part of it has black privacy slats inserted, and another part has black and gray privacy slats. It looks really ugly. We probably should have fenced our property first. However, there was still an old fence standing that was still usable and looked nicer. But she didn’t want it anymore and paid for everything herself. Otherwise, we might have had a say in it.

Because she doesn’t want birds and such in the garden, she attached plastic spikes to the fence. There are also those flashing devices hanging in the bushes with berries, which glare at us on the terrace depending on the sun’s position, along with other noisy things meant to scare animals away.

I’ll put it this way: the birds don’t care and happily sit on the plastic spikes. The cats don’t seem bothered either. I really enjoy watching the animals, and I keep feeding them.

@shenja
and then your neighbor signs for small talk and pleasantries.

We don’t have fences like that here. Are those purely privacy fences or do they also provide sound insulation?

Good grief. How can that possibly fit together?

Actually, it does look quite good.

In the end, fences are a matter of personal taste. Some people really like a solid stone wall, others prefer plastic fencing, and others swear by hedges.

Since the original poster wants complete privacy screening (with no judgment), WPC or similar fences could be a suitable option. They are definitely not cheap but can look quite nice.

To finally answer the question:
It doesn’t get any cheaper than double wire mesh fencing with plastic strips, nor any uglier or more tasteless.
