I’m interested in your opinions on fences. Our previous house and property had no fences or boundaries, which we really liked. At the new house and property, unfortunately, the neighbors on both sides have fences, which we obviously have to accept. At the back, bordering the field, we’ll try to avoid putting up any fence, even if that means deer might occasionally stand on our property and nibble. ;-) At the front, facing the street, we definitely won’t install a fence unless it becomes absolutely necessary because strangers are parking on our property or dog owners are using it as a dog park, though I don’t expect that to happen.

What reasons do you have for putting up fences around your house or property, or why do you choose to go without? By the way, on our street, all the houses and properties are fenced, so it seems most people prefer it that way. Still, I “dare” to conduct a survey.

By “fence” I mean any kind of boundary, including moats with drawbridges, walls, etc.

At the moment, 100% are against fencing, but you know how surveys like this usually go. ;-)

So, we don’t want a fence, but all the neighboring properties do.
On the sides without neighbors, we will plant a hedge instead of a fence.
The area by the front door will simply remain open.

Everyone around us has fully fenced their property, with a locked gate at the front.
I’m also wondering why this is done.
Is it for burglary protection?

As I said, with us it has to be because of the dog.

I could do just a hedge, but my wife won’t agree.

I think for most people it’s really something emotional. This idea of setting boundaries and having something that is theirs.
A bit of burglary protection or simply preventing anyone—even by accident—from walking onto the property.
In some areas, it’s actually essential as protection against unleashed dogs. Otherwise, they just leave their mess everywhere.

We have a fence along the public staircase and as a fall protection on the retaining wall.
At the parking area, we have a wall.
All are just under 1 meter (3 feet) high and without any plastic privacy screens.

A fence is necessary. Here is the reason:

Black-and-white dog stands on grass next to a metal wire fence and looks at the camera.

I don’t like fences, but sometimes they are necessary for many reasons. For example, I want to prevent stepping on hazards or for the safety of small children from our family or friends, etc.
