ᐅ Would you like to have fences around your house or property, and if so, why?

I’m interested in your opinions on fences. Our previous house and property had no fences or boundaries, which we really liked. At the new house and property, unfortunately, the neighbors on both sides have fences, which we obviously have to accept. At the back, bordering the field, we’ll try to avoid putting up any fence, even if that means deer might occasionally stand on our property and nibble. ;-) At the front, facing the street, we definitely won’t install a fence unless it becomes absolutely necessary because strangers are parking on our property or dog owners are using it as a dog park, though I don’t expect that to happen.

What reasons do you have for putting up fences around your house or property, or why do you choose to go without? By the way, on our street, all the houses and properties are fenced, so it seems most people prefer it that way. Still, I “dare” to conduct a survey.

By “fence” I mean any kind of boundary, including moats with drawbridges, walls, etc.

At the moment, 100% are against fencing, but you know how surveys like this usually go. ;-)

It’s terrible when your belongings aren’t safe on your own property.
Yes, it’s really unfortunate. In the first year, all the Christmas decorations at the front were stolen. Then all the flowers and a willow tree were taken. Now there’s nothing nice left at the front. There’s hardly any space anyway.
The off-leash dogs are always around the house in the garden and have done their business there. No one cleaned it up. Now they only leave waste by the fence. When you give the owners a bag, they clean it up, but then we find the bags in our hedge.
My mother-in-law had her bike stolen from the garden, and she has already had overnight visitors sleeping on the garden furniture. Also some teenagers hanging out in the gardens at night.
Reading all this, it seems quite unusual here.
Well, if I could live somewhere else, I would have moved already. But there’s simply nothing nice and affordable.

In our area, many walkers are out and about, and they enter everywhere there is no fence or gate.
"Was open after all" is increasingly seen as an invitation for both dogs and people.

I was also initially in favor of having no fence. However, since the dog owners in the neighborhood showed little interest in preventing their dogs from entering my property, I eventually decided to install a fence with a hedge and a planted berm. From the inside, I cannot see the fence.

Phew – it seems we live quite idyllically here – so far, there are no such improper people. My nightly guest on the sofa during days of bad weather is just a fox – but we haven’t had any real rain for half a year... It is so dry here that smoking is no longer allowed even in nature, which suits me just fine since I find the smell of smoke disgusting anyway.

Yes to the fence. In front of the house, there is a private road that the neighborhood kids use as a playground, and behind our garden is the community playground. I want to prevent the kids from taking the direct route. For that reason, I don’t want any unfamiliar dogs on the property.

Dogs are a problem on plots located at the forest edge. Here, dogs are still allowed to run off-leash. Don’t ask where people come from on nice weather days.

Otherwise, we seem to live quite peacefully. Just a village after all.
