Good morning everyone,

We are planning to build our house soon in the beautiful Westerwald region. Since we have a large dog, we will need a fence when we move in.

We have a 1200 m² (0.3 acre) plot – undeveloped plots on the left and right – forest at the back – and in front, a construction access road.

Now my question is: can we install the fence (right on the boundary) we want along the construction access road already, or would it be better to wait? Of course, we could also put up a temporary fence.
By construction access road, I mean that there are no sidewalks yet and the surface is partly gravel.

Since we would place the fence on “our” boundary, it shouldn’t obstruct the road builder, right? If it does, what would be the consequences?

Thank you very much for your help!

Before building a fence, the outdoor area should be fully prepared. This is because completing the landscaping afterward is usually impractical, and it often results in the fence height not aligning properly. Besides, you probably don’t want your dog walking on gravel (just speculation, I don’t know much about dogs).

So either you build something very temporary, or you tackle the entire outdoor landscaping for a final result.

Okay, thanks to you as well!

Then we'll do it as you and the others mentioned earlier suggested… meaning we'll fence off a small section until we finish the landscaping.

We installed our fence promptly, partly because of the dog, almost immediately after the soil was leveled... No larger machines were needed for anything else, so it was all straightforward. We stayed about 10cm (4 inches) away from the boundary to allow the hedge to grow fully around the fence. This caused no issues for the road construction later on; everything went smoothly without a single scratch.

I would do it after the shell construction is completed. Yes, after it is clear that the landscaping contractor has largely distributed their materials and the levels in the garden are established.
