Hello everyone,

A basic question:
We can have tiles up to 1.4m (4.5 feet) high in the bathroom (included in the house price). However, we have planned to use 30 x 60cm (12 x 24 inches) tiles. Now, we could go with 1.2m (4 x 30cm / 4 x 12 inches) or 1.5m (5 x 30cm / 5 x 12 inches).

The tiler would prefer 1.5m (4.9 feet), but the tile supplier said 1.2m (3.9 feet) would look better.

This concerns the guest shower and bathroom. (Walk-in showers without a step will be fully tiled up to the ceiling.)

What are your suggestions?

Well, there will also be areas that will be tiled up to the ceiling or at least 200 to 220 cm high (80 to 87 inches).

For me, how high something is installed depends on the overall concept. So, first create the overall bathroom design and then decide which heights are needed. Or where you might skip tiling altogether.

Basically, I consider about 120 cm height (47 inches) as a better standard for half-height tiling than 150 cm (59 inches).

Shower 200-220 cm (79-87 inches), toilet/washbasin 120-150 cm (47-59 inches) depending on on-site conditions (built-in shelf or similar). Remaining areas without tiles.

The topic of tiles is endless! Ask two people, and you’ll get seven opinions! It’s hard to give general advice since we don’t know the floor plan or the tile pattern. In the shower area, of course, tiles should go up to the ceiling; elsewhere, the height will likely depend on the planned furniture. I tend to go for 150 cm (59 inches).

Maybe some of you could share pictures?

In none of our bathrooms do we have tiles all around the walls, only where necessary, that is around the sink, bathtub, toilet, and in the shower—up to the required height. The rest of the wall surfaces are simply covered with paintable wallpaper and painted white. It looks more modern and homely this way, instead of having tiles everywhere.

1.50m (5 feet) is way too high anyway; how would you hang pictures or decorations on the walls then?

Best regards,

To add an opinion: A shower with full-height walls, otherwise 1.80m (5 ft 11 in).

1.20m (3 ft 11 in) is already inconvenient because there are probably switches or outlets very close by.
