ᐅ Stringer partially in front of window – should the stringer be notched out?

Dear forum members,

We have just received the plans for our U-shaped staircase.
As we feared, part of it will run in front of the hallway window.
One idea from the staircase builder is to cut out the stringer in the visible window area and add an extra tread that extends in front of the window.
It looks good on the drawing at first, but I’m not sure if it will look good in real life with such an irregular stringer...
Certainly, the window could make it look nice again, but I’m still uncertain...

Letting it run through is the lesser evil; I would do the same.

I wouldn’t have thought so either. It really shows the value of good planning and a skilled architect from the start. But you can’t think of everything or know everything during the initial planning phase. Some issues only come up during the course of the construction. You also get a lot of input from the tradespeople. It’s great that forums like this exist.

Will a railing be installed in front of the window by the staircase?

If so, the window will hardly be visible, right?

No, there won’t be a railing in that spot. There is only a post on the inside at that location.
