ᐅ Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery – You Can Hear Every Word from Another Room – Is This Normal?

Hello everyone,
We had the final inspection of our house two weeks ago. Now we have noticed that through the central ventilation system in the guest bathroom and utility room, every word spoken in the dining/kitchen/living area can be heard very clearly, as if you were sitting right next to each other. With the bathroom door open, the sound naturally carries up to the children’s bedrooms upstairs. On the upper floor, the sound transmission through the controlled mechanical ventilation system is significantly less.
Can I still report this as a defect after the final inspection?
Thank you very much and best regards!

The ventilated living area is 165 m² (1776 ft²). Yes, the ventilation system is from Nibe, as indicated on the unit. You can select the operating level on the indoor part of the heat pump. We almost always have it set to normal. Even then, it makes quite a bit of noise. I estimate that’s about 70%. However, the air inside the rooms still somehow feels stale—or at least it seems that way. But maybe that’s because the house is still so new?

First of all, with exposed piping made of spiral-seam pipes (which you have), it is very easy to retrofit additional components. You remove the pipe, cut out a section, and reinstall it together with a silencer. You will likely need just one or two extra brackets sized for the (larger) diameter of the silencer.
However:
This only works if the exposed length of the pipe is sufficient to accommodate the silencer!
Also, the shorter the silencer, the less effective the noise reduction.

Tomorrow, someone from the company that installed the mechanical ventilation system will come by.
Do I have to accept this noise level and the strong sound transmission through the mechanical ventilation system into all rooms?
It seems that none of you have this problem. I can hear every sound from my washing machine in the living room as if it were right next to me.

It seems like none of you have this problem. I can currently hear every sound from my washing machine in the living room, as if it were right next to me.No, this noise is not normal. Normally, you shouldn’t hear anything.
