ᐅ Completed large garage: Wood or concrete? What are the costs?

Hello,

I’m currently researching garages. Since we will most likely be building a timber frame house, I am generally open to a wooden garage as well. The garage should be 6x9m (20x30 ft) in size, so a large space with a sectional door, plus a separate storage room with doors leading both to the garage and to the garden, including a window and electrical outlets. Ideally, it should be insulated, with a flat roof without greenery. We are building without a basement and therefore want to plan for a sufficiently large storage room inside the garage. If there are any users who have built a similar garage, it would be very interesting to know the total cost including the foundation. Unfortunately, I have no idea what price range this would be in or the differences in price and quality between wooden garages and precast concrete garages.

Thanks

Pro for wood: the XXL door is much easier. As far as I know, with a concrete garage it becomes a real heavy transport challenge if you want a door.

I can confirm that. That’s why I chose two individual concrete garages stacked on top of each other, connected internally. Timber frame construction wasn’t possible because I have earth fill on the side. Only concrete can withstand that.

Best regards

Then single garages are practically placed one behind the other, rotated by about 90°. That means the joint is not between the left and right garage, but between the front and rear sections. This has never been and will never be my preferred design.

Yep, those are three 3x6m (10x20ft) garages joined together.

I am currently building with wood—a combined carport/garage with a storage room and earth backfilling on one side. We formed the strip foundation 1 meter (3.3 feet) higher and then built the wall on top of that. So basically, the first meter (3.3 feet) is a reinforced concrete wall. This is possible, with a local joinery, for 17k plus foundations, plus plaster, plus paving inside the garage.

Yes, that’s actually not a problem since I want to have a distance of about 1.5m (5 feet) between the garage and the house anyway, then a canopy between the house entrance and the garage
If you place a prefabricated garage directly next to a house, only two things are necessary: 1. coordinated planning of the construction sequence to ensure the garage foundations are installed without causing damage to the house, and 2. a roof-to-wall flashing detail.

If you want to add a roof structure between the house and garage as a separate construction, it actually becomes more complicated because you need to ensure two connections. In this case, it is especially important to have integrated planning and, if necessary, avoid buying a prefabricated garage, opting instead for a fully coordinated solution from a single source.

By the way, we have a concrete garage (but not a timber-framed house).
