Hello

I want to cover my climate-controlled cellar (about 20m² (215 sq ft)) with granite tiles (30.5 x 30.5 x 1cm (12 x 12 x 0.4 inches)).
The slab = concrete floor is relatively level. Maximum unevenness is 5mm (0.2 inches).
Can I glue the tiles directly onto the concrete using flexible adhesive, or do I definitely need to use a leveling compound? I want to avoid the cost of leveling compound if it’s not absolutely necessary.
What do the experts say?

Hello RobsonMKK

I was given the tiles for free.
I will only hesitate to apply the leveling compound if it is professionally acceptable to do otherwise.

What do you mean by uneven? 5mm (0.2 inches)...?

Is there a raised area somewhere that might only be 5mm (0.2 inches) high but you can’t detect it? This can cause problems like this: For example, you start tiling on the left and work your way to the right. You apply about 3mm (0.1 inches) of adhesive and lay the first two tiles. The unevenness causes your tile to act like a seesaw and shoot upwards, making it impossible to properly install.

I only say thick-bed mortar, not adhesive.

The man is right. That’s how it’s done.

As a non-professional who has correctly and precisely installed 30cm (12 inch) tiles in a 50m² (538 sq ft) living room, I would not trust myself to do thick-bed installation.

Certainly, but then he can’t avoid using leveling compound, and it’s not as simple as one might think.
