We wanted to scarify and apply fertilizer. In two weeks, we will go on vacation, so the lawn can thrive afterwards. Is it worth reseeding problem areas now, or is it better to wait until spring?

Fertilizing is essential. The last few dry summer weeks have definitely affected my lawn quite a bit. I fertilized last Friday. Scarifying will be done in the spring.

It doesn't have to be a cheap fast-acting lawn fertilizer. In autumn, it's better to use one with low nitrogen and high potassium.

I wouldn’t scarify my lawn at all; it only weakens it. Our lawn is never scarified and looks very healthy (without moss and weeds). If you regularly water, fertilize, and mow it, you can achieve a very nice, dense, weed-free lawn.

So why do the professionals recommend aerating and scarifying?
Our lawn is also very dense, and we water and fertilize it. Still, dead material accumulates between the grass blades. You can especially see these spots when I mow very short. Then, alongside the green, you can still see the gray-yellow of the dead grass blades. And that has to be removed; otherwise, the lawn will eventually turn into a meadow.

Just google "scarifying myth."

We have had our lawn for 16 years, and it is dark green, dense, and definitely not a meadow—all without scarifying.
The most important things are fertilizing, mowing, and watering!

However, there are also professionals who advise against scarifying.

I’m jumping in with my lawn problem. Our lawn has turned into a meadow, or actually it already was like that when we bought the house. How can I get it back in shape?
My plan was: mow now, scarify, and then fertilize 2-3 days later.
