GIACOMON5429 Jun 2015 10:34Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy shelf unit from IKEA and wanted to install the shelves. However, they don’t fit properly into the designated supports, or they cannot be installed evenly. The shelves sit unevenly, in some places the gap between the shelf and the side panel seems irregular, and the entire unit feels somewhat unstable.
I have already checked whether I inserted the metal pins in the correct positions and if I used the right holes, but the problem persists. Since I value order and stability, I wonder if there are known reasons why the shelves don’t fit properly? Are there perhaps different versions of the Billy that are not compatible, or could there be manufacturing defects?
I would appreciate detailed experiences or explanations on what else I could check and how to fix this issue. Many thanks in advance!

Hey GIACOMON54,
it’s frustrating when shelves don’t sit level! 🙂 I had the same issue once, where the shelf was slightly warped due to transport. This can happen sometimes with BILLY because the side panels are quite thin. Often, it helps to remove all the dowels and then reinsert them carefully, making sure they are perfectly aligned at the same height. Also, the metal dowels on BILLY usually fit quite precisely, but if they’re not pushed in deep enough, the shelf can tilt slightly.
Maybe your side panels are not perfectly flat or have a slight warp? A bit of pressure or shaking can help to properly seat the shelf. Sometimes an incorrectly installed back panel, which is meant to stabilize the whole unit, is the cause.
Try installing the shelves without any items on them and gently rock the unit back and forth – this often reveals where it’s binding or sitting unevenly. Keep us updated! 🙂

I completely understand that even with instructions, problems can arise, especially with a standard product like BILLY. It can really take the fun out of it when something doesn’t go smoothly.
I’ve experienced exactly that. In my case, one of the shelves was slightly warped—barely noticeable—but combined with the side panels, it was enough to prevent the shelf from fitting properly. I simply rotated the shelf slightly so the corners aligned better. Maybe that could be an option for you too?
Try not to get stressed; usually, with a bit of patience, you can find a solution. 🙂

GIACOMON5429 Jun 2015 14:46Thanks for the tips so far. During assembly, I measured and noticed that the metal pins fit slightly looser in the lower holes than in the upper ones. Some of the drill holes also seem to be slightly irregularly drilled. I also made sure that the back panel is fully flush.
I’ve also noticed that the fit on the left side of the shelf is a bit worse than on the right side.
--> How exactly did you turn the board to make it fit better? Just placing the edge differently?
Overall, the workmanship looks very neat, but I’m wondering if I might have an issue with this model or version of the shelf? I have the BILLY with a height of 202 cm (79.5 inches), so maybe the shelves differ?

Wow, very observant! 🙂 The uneven fit on the left and right sides is a really interesting observation.
I once had a larger BILLY shelf too, and with those, you could perfectly align the shelves by slightly adjusting the metal pins. You might also try gently tapping the shelves into place with a rubber mallet—very gently! Sometimes a small tap helps the shelves settle more securely.
Your idea that different versions might vary is possible, but IKEA provides shelves that fit each size precisely.
Keep at it! You’re doing great—I really like your approach! 🙂
