ᐅ Why don’t the shelves fit properly in my BILLY bookcase?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy shelf unit from IKEA and wanted to install the shelves. However, they don’t fit properly into the designated supports, or they cannot be installed evenly. The shelves sit unevenly, in some places the gap between the shelf and the side panel seems irregular, and the entire unit feels somewhat unstable.

I have already checked whether I inserted the metal pins in the correct positions and if I used the right holes, but the problem persists. Since I value order and stability, I wonder if there are known reasons why the shelves don’t fit properly? Are there perhaps different versions of the Billy that are not compatible, or could there be manufacturing defects?

I would appreciate detailed experiences or explanations on what else I could check and how to fix this issue. Many thanks in advance!

I think it makes sense to systematically examine the cause: Are there manufacturing inaccuracies with the BILLY, or is the issue related to the assembly?

So far, a lot of attention has been given to possible warping and loose drill holes, which I can understand. However, it is also important to check whether the individual parts actually belong together – sometimes parts are mixed up during returns or transport, leading to incompatibilities.

Additionally, the back panel should be firmly and evenly installed, as it stabilizes the entire shelving unit and may cause shelves to appear uneven if it is loose.

My question to GIACOMON54: Have you checked if the back panel fits perfectly and if all the metal pins are inserted at the same height? These details could be crucial.

Thanks again to everyone! I took dinano’s advice seriously and completely disassembled everything yesterday, paying special attention to fitting the back panel very precisely. Then I checked the metal pins and adjusted them all to exactly the same height. This actually improved the fit of the shelves significantly.

the back panel must be installed very tight and flush because it stabilizes the entire shelving unit

That was the key! Before, the back panel wasn’t fully pressed in, which caused the side panels to spread apart slightly.

@relupa: I slightly rotated the shelf so that the corners fit better into the grooves. Because of that, they now sit much more securely.

I’m definitely learning that patience and precision are needed when assembling IKEA shelves. The issue for me was more with the assembly than the product itself.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful tips!

Great that you were able to solve the problem!

In summary: Fit issues with BILLY shelves usually occur because the back panels are not completely flat or the metal pins are unevenly installed.

If both of these points are taken into account, the shelves will usually fit neatly and firmly.

Enjoy your shelf!
