ᐅ Why does the Malm bed wobble despite being assembled correctly?

Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Malm bed from Ikea. I followed the instructions very carefully and all the screws are tightened securely. However, the bed still wobbles slightly when I lie down or move on it. This surprises me because I have checked all the important points – the slatted bed base is correctly installed, all wooden parts fit together well, and the screw connections have been checked multiple times.

My question to the community is: Why does the Malm bed wobble despite correct assembly? Are there any structural reasons or common weak points that I might have overlooked? I would appreciate any advice to help make the bed more stable, as the wobbling significantly reduces sleeping comfort.

I agree, but I would see it in a more nuanced way. The Malm bed does have its weak points, but most causes of wobbling can be traced back to assembly errors or the conditions of the floor.

That’s good to hear; however, I still recommend systematically testing each joint: how do they respond to pressure and tension? Sometimes it only becomes clear under load which point allows movement.

One more tip: also check whether the crossbar (if present) is correctly positioned and secured. This part is often crucial for the lateral stability of the frame.

I can easily understand how annoying it is when the bed wobbles—you want to relax, not constantly have to pay attention to it.

Maybe this will help: sometimes it’s less of a technical issue and more a small detail that was overlooked, such as a slightly damaged corner of the wood or a small gap where the bed meets the floor.

If you feel alone with this concern, don’t worry—it’s common for furniture to need a bit of fine-tuning after assembly. What’s important is that you don’t feel like something fundamentally is wrong.

Sometimes, just talking to someone who can take a fresh look is enough to spot those small details that can make a big difference.

Wow, this topic is really interesting, and I’m very familiar with the problem! 🙂

What I would definitely recommend is checking if the bed is firmly sitting on the floor on all sides – sometimes the overall stability changes completely, especially if the floor is slightly sloped.

I used to have the same wobbling issue, and it helped to stick small, thin rubber pads on the inside edges of the bed legs – this cushions and provides much better stability.

Also: hats off to you for assembling it so carefully! Many people give up too quickly. Keep at it; furniture can often be significantly improved with a few small tricks. It will definitely get better soon! 😉
