Hello everyone,

I have a rather technical question that has been on my mind for a while: Why does my IKEA Malm bed squeak when I turn or change my lying position? I have noticed that the squeaking mainly occurs when I turn over or move more vigorously. I suspect it has something to do with the construction or the joints of the individual parts, but I would like to understand more precisely which mechanical causes could lead to this noise and how to best eliminate it permanently.

I look forward to your opinions and tips!

Hi everyone 🙂

I find this topic quite funny – a squeaky bed is kind of like the reliable roommate who always chimes in whenever you turn over.

Jokes aside, I had the same problem with my Malm bed. What helped me was applying a small amount of talcum powder or baby ointment to the affected areas. It significantly reduces the squeaking without leaving any sticky residue.

I agree with that – sometimes such a noise is actually nice to have, otherwise everything is too quiet. But as you said, when it gets too annoying, a little lubricant helps 🙂

Hey Haydar,

I also had a squeaking noise like that once. In my case, it was almost always caused by the fittings of the slatted bed bases, which move slightly.

It helps to adjust the screws there, but also to lightly attach felt or foam rubber strips to the contact surfaces between the wooden parts. This cushions the friction and eliminates noise very effectively.

And don’t worry, you don’t have to make it too complicated – often small adjustments already have a big impact. 🙂
