Hello everyone,

I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: Why does the Malm bed squeak under load?

As far as I know, the frame is mainly made of particleboard and metal parts in the form of screws and connectors. Still, there is always this annoying squeaking noise when I move or sit on the bed.

I imagine it could be due to the joints – perhaps friction and material fatigue play a role here? Or is it related to the design of Malm beds in general, especially when combined with certain slatted bed bases or mattresses?

Does anyone have more detailed experience or explanations about why these typical squeaking noises occur particularly under load? And what can be done to make the annoying noise disappear or at least reduce it?

Thanks in advance for your input!

The main cause of squeaking in Malm beds usually lies in the joints between the particleboard panels and the metal connector units.

That’s exactly the case. The surfaces at the connection points rub against each other, and the tension of the screws changes under load, causing slight micro-movements that are perceived as squeaking.

Additionally, inexpensive particleboard is often more porous and less stable than solid wood, which intensifies the phenomenon. For this reason, it is recommended to regularly check the screws and, if necessary, apply a special lubricant (e.g., graphite powder or silicone spray) at the contact points.

Checking the slatted frame and ensuring it rests evenly can also help reduce the squeaking.

In addition to Gino’s explanations:

1. A common source of problems is loose connection screws. Over time, these often settle slightly, causing micro-movements.

2. The assembly of the bed frame is important – if the frame is slightly warped or not properly aligned, additional stresses can occur;

3. Friction points often develop at the headboard and footboard, which can cause quiet but annoying squeaking noises.

I recommend completely disassembling the bed according to the instructions and then carefully reassembling it. At each step, lightly roughen the connection points with dry sandpaper and then treat them with a bit of dry wax or graphite. I would not recommend using oil, as it can dissolve materials and cause wood or particleboard to swell.

Finally, always tighten the screws alternately, never only on one side in sequence, to distribute the stresses as evenly as possible.

Hey 🙂

From my own experience, I can confirm that squeaking is a common issue. A bed like the Malm is very stylish, but once it starts creaking, it can become really annoying.

That really worked wonders for me—I used silicone spray. It was really easy and stopped the noise completely.

It also helps to slightly move or reposition the mattress—sometimes the slatted frame and bed frame don’t fit perfectly together, which causes small movements that create the noise.

A small tip at the end: Don’t get frustrated—almost everyone with an affordable bed made of wood particleboard experiences this 😉 Just check regularly and do some maintenance, and the squeaking will stay under control.

Summary:

- Tighten screws
- Lightly lubricate contact points (graphite or silicone)
- Check that the bed frame is sturdy and level
- Position the slatted frame and mattress correctly

These are the most common and effective methods to prevent squeaking.
