Hello everyone,
I recently chose a Malm bed from IKEA and am generally satisfied with the design and workmanship. However, I am wondering how to properly maintain this piece of furniture to ensure it remains stable and attractive even after several years. Especially with solid wood or veneered furniture, there are often specific recommendations.
What is the best way to care for Malm beds to extend their lifespan? Are there any special cleaning tools, suitable maintenance products, or practical tips you can recommend?
I’m also interested in whether there is anything to consider regarding stability – for example, regularly tightening screws or similar measures.
I look forward to detailed experiences and advice, including tips on what to avoid. Thank you in advance!

Hello!
Your question is great, since Malm beds really aren’t designed for short-term use 😉. In general, it’s enough to dust regularly, preferably with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth.
For cleaning, I strongly advise against using standard cleaning agents, as they can damage the surface. Instead, use furniture care products specifically designed for veneered wood – these also provide good protection. And yes, checking the screws from time to time is very valuable; I do this with my furniture about every six months.
Oh, and don’t forget the mattress, because improper sleeping positions can put extra pressure on the bed frame. Good luck!

And yes, checking screws from time to time is worth its weight in goldI can only agree with that. It may sound simple, but I have experienced a Malm bed starting to creak or wobble after a while because a screw was loose. Especially if you move or adjust the bed frequently, it’s worthwhile to check.
Also, for maintenance, I often use a microfiber cloth and apply furniture oil very sparingly. A good tip is not to use too much moisture, as the wood can suffer from it.
How about you? Do you also use home remedies for care, or do you rely on commercial products?
Regarding the care of a Malm bed: it is usually made from particleboard with a foil surface, which makes maintenance easier but also excludes certain treatments.
It is important to avoid aggressive cleaning agents that could damage the foil. A mild furniture cleaner applied with a damp cloth and then wiped dry is recommended.
The lifespan of Malm beds largely depends on careful assembly and regularly tightening the screws. This ensures stability and reduces the risk of damage caused by wobbling.
If you keep the bed clean, avoid moisture, and support the mechanism, you can enjoy it for several years.

The key to the durability of a Malm bed primarily lies in proper assembly and the following care instructions:
1. Follow the assembly instructions provided by IKEA carefully. Dowels, screws, and fittings are often included. These must be installed correctly to prevent damage from stress.
2. Daily cleaning: Do not use wet mopping or steam cleaning. A dry microfiber cloth is sufficient for dust removal.
3. Surface: Since Malm usually has a foil surface, avoid volatile solvents, bleach, and oil-based care products, as they can damage the foil.
4. Check screws and fittings every six months to ensure they are securely fastened — any deformation or wobbling indicates they need tightening.
Another important note: Direct sunlight can cause the surface to fade, which affects its appearance.
