ᐅ Why is my Billy bookcase still wobbly even though I used the included wall anchors?

fumu36Hello everyone, I recently bought and assembled a Billy shelf from Ikea. I used the included wall plugs both to connect the parts and to secure it to the wall. Despite this, the shelf wobbles quite a bit, especially when shaken or under light load. The screws are tight, and the wall plugs appear to have been used correctly. My question is: Why does my Billy shelf wobble even though I used the supplied wall plugs, which are supposed to provide stability? Could this be related to the type of wall plugs, the wall material, or the assembly method? I would appreciate any tips or advice on what else I could check or do differently.
The dowels provided by Ikea are mainly designed for solid walls such as concrete or solid brick. If your wall is made of drywall or is a hollow wall, these dowels may not provide sufficient support. Additionally, it is important that the screws fully expand the dowels; otherwise, they will not hold properly. Please make sure to check whether the dowels and screws are compatible with the wall material and whether the dowel fits tightly when screwed in.

For drywall (plasterboard) walls, you should use special cavity anchors or additionally secure the shelf with a wall bracket. Installing a sturdy wooden board behind the shelf can also help to increase stability.
You should also check whether the shelf feet are properly aligned and not standing on an uneven floor. Many forget to adjust the feet so the shelf is level—a slight tilt can increase the wobbling.

I would like to add that you should consider not only the wall structure but also the precision of the installation. Even with the correct type of anchor, wobbling can occur due to inaccurate pre-drilling or incorrect anchor diameter. For example, if the drill hole is too large, the anchor cannot grip properly. Additionally, it is important to check whether the shelf itself has any bent or damaged parts.
Are the screws really fully screwed in? Sometimes it feels tight, but if the screw isn’t seated deep enough, there can be movement in the shelf.
